Do you know where you're going to, do you like the things life has shown you?

For those ATOTers who use a GPS for car navigation, when you know where you are and where you're going, do you turn on your GPS anyway?

Not necessarily because I think it is a distraction, but when I don't need it, I just don't use it. I keep it in my center console so I only set it up when I'm going on a road trip, etc.

Don't have a GPS, but I wouldn't use it if I knew where I was going, what would be the point?

Mine's built-in, so it's technically "on" all the time, but not active as it's usually just on the CD screen most the time.

Nope. The only times I have turned it on is to show it to people that wanted to see it, otherwise it just sits there.

this, although I ad mit after getting it the first time, i did use it while going to places i knew the way to, just to see if it had a better/faster way of getting there. usually it didn't.

I put it on occasionally when I know where I'm going so I can have a ballpark estimate of how long it's going to take to get there.

meh. Our Expedition came with a built in nav-system. I think I've turned it on once in 3-1/2 years.

I know how to read a fucking map.

If I have multiple stops in one day just running errands or whatever I'll turn it on to see if it gives me a shortcut or a more direct route than I would normally take. Sometimes you end up taking the same roads you always have and never realize there's a better way.

Google maps + old-school maps FTW!

I'm not against GPS, I just see it as a waste of money. Sure it's cool but if you get lost and have to figure your way out you will definitely remember the area better the next time you have to go through it.

Nope. It turns on by itself but I dont set anything since it's a pain in the ass to do it for no reason.

I use it every day to/from work.

I know the way - been driving there for years - but I use it for 2 things: detours in case of heavy traffic and/or construction, and trip timing.

I reset the timer at the beginning of the trip, and record the time it takes me to get to/from work. I log it. I'm a nerd.

Also, I've grown used to seeing the exact distance I need to turn and whatnot. It's not a distraction at all. I don't have the guided voice on. Oh, and it syncs up with my phone so I also use it as a hands-free speaker phone.

I would use it more often if my mother let me. 🙁 She insists on not doing it and reading the tiny ass street signs on the 15ft high poles. How am I suppose to read that shit from 300ft away? I don't make sudden decisions when I am driving. >_< Besides how the fuck should I know where I am going when I hardly ever go out in Portland, OR or Vancouver, WA? Big cities, guys. I have been out on the road just a few times and I don't go far out and explore. We go to few places and my life is very contained. Definitely need GPS for a place like this, especially when I am fucking clueless.

So, yes. Just going to go with that.

😵 How is that FTW when you don't have a computer and you are in a big city with no knowledge of the area? >_>

GPS FTW.. It helps, especially when you don't know the area at all.

Never used one in a car before. But if it's anything like Operation Flashpoint or Grand Theft Auto, I'll be staring at it in my lap while accelerating...

Atlas, maps, signs, dead reckoning. I rarely use GPS in the car and only when off pavement where there are no road names or signs.

Depends where I am and where I'm going. In Rochester, or going between Rochester and home? It's on even if I don't really need it. At home? It sits on my desk in the house.

i don't understand the 2nd part of the OP's title...

i can read a map too, bt i can't read it while driving in traffic. it's bad enough trying to read mapquest directions while driving and trying to look for street signs.

and speaking of street signs, could they be any smaller\in the shittiest locations? why aren't the street names in huge letters hanging from the same things that hold traffic lights? wouldn't that make things 10x easier than it currently is?

To answer the question, yes. I frequently have my GPS device running when I'm going somewhere that I need no assistance in navigating to. Why? I can read street names on the GPS unit with just a glance -- much easier than trying to strain my eyes to read the tiny street signs that are sometimes beyond my line of sight, and are never appropriately lighted after dark.

And for those of you who think you're too good to use a GPS device... I also know how to read a map/atlas and road signs, and can navigate accordingly. While I usually have a map in my car if I'm going on a long trip in case I need to refer to it, I don't keep a map of my local area -- I don't see the point.
