I just can't stay afloat. No matter how hard I try I will just sink to the bottom like a rock. I think I'm just not built to swim, maybe my body is too dense.

No, all body is designed to float at full breath in your lungs. Get a full breath of air in your body and let your body loose in water, you will notice you will start to float.
edit: I could tread water for a long time. Not actually forcefully swim(as in across a large lake or something) but it does NOT take very much energy to float and not drown.
Swimming a distance would be like an extensive exercise, and I'm out of shape.. "treading water", or floating.. doggy paddling.. I could do all day.
