I'm at work and was asked if I knew how. I don't yet...lol But, I was wondering if any of you did. If you do...Can you give me tips?

which os? It should be easy in windows. Just plug it in appropriate slot and install drivers. Win2k has native support for most of the cards.

Open up the case, plug it into an empty PCI slot or ISA slot (depending on the type of card....new cards will be PCI), plug in the RJ-45 cable, install the drivers, install the necessary protocols, ie TCP/IP.

I guess that's an overview....how detailed do you want?

turn OFF THE COMputer
open the case, put the PCI ethernet card into any available slot, and secure it.
close the case.
turn ON the computer
boot up win98 or win2k... and see if windows can detect the hardware automatically... then just stick the installation floppy disk so windows can find the drivers.

Turn off PC, unplug PC, Take screw off slot cover, put in ethernet card, put screw back in slot cover, plug PC in, turn PC on, pray winXXX has built in drivers, if it doesnt have built in drivers, insert driver disk when prompted, if you dont have driver disk go on internet, DOH! cant get on internet because driver isnt loaded for ethernet card! Call TECH SUPPORT. 🙂

Hey, thanks you guys. I called the customer back and he said I was about 10 minutes late. He had already installed it. But, thank you very much for your help!! 😀

The customer should understand that you have other calls to attend to and can't just hang up on the others to make your scheduled call-back. Gotta lay down the law, Hzl! 🙂

Some cards (3COM) require that a pre-install routine be run first then the unit is shut down, opened up, and the card installed. Otherwise the card will not be properly recognized by the operating system and it is all downhill from there.

<< pssssst, heather, the tip is to read the manual.... >>

Tim, he wasn't a customer of mine personally. The sales manager came in here to ask me that. He had asked some of the other girls in here if they knew how and no one did. There are about 3 of us that have the most computer knowledge. lol So....no manual for me to read. 😛 (Bite me!!!!)

lol It wasn't that big of a deal. I don't think the guy even knew I was gonna call him. Just that maybe someone would or something. lol

<< No. I've never done it before in my life. How do you install an Ethernet card?

Looks like just about everyone is gonna just have to bite me. 😛 You all are just a bunch of smart@sses. 😉 (Not that I'm not or anything.)

I guess it's time to really start looking for an A+ Certification class to join. I want to hurry up and get that over with.

I knew if I posted my problem here, I'd get a fast response. Thank you all for trying to help. (Even though, as it turned, the guy figured it out himself.)
