Do you know Fog Lights? Help me out.

Have a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE with one blown bulb. Will replace both tomorrow. I thought of just getting stock basic bulbs. But now, thinking of maybe getting something brighter. I do NOT want any blue lights, or any HID type tinge of blue.

I just want clean bright light. Something that sort of matches my main head lights. What about the Sylvania Silver Stars. About $40 for the pair. Would they be any brighter than the stock fog lights? What about range and life? Any better than the OEM bulbs?

Please let me know as I want to buy a set before go to work in the am. Also, what voltage is are the fog lams? 55w, I think?

US-market silverstars are tinted and blue. They are NOT good for fog lights as they have problems with backscatter and glare. They also put out fewer lumens than normal bulbs, the glare (which reduces ability to see) just makes them appear brighter even though your vision is made worse.

Just buy the stock bulbs.

Besides, it's very rare to need fogs. I think I use mine maybe 5 times a year. You should NOT use the fog lights unless there is fog.

Do not use fogs with your main lights on dim. I hate that.

Do not use fog lights UNLESS IT IS FOGGY.

I don't.

I think I used mine in the last year probably 4 times tops.

Why should you not use them?

They cause glare for other drivers, and only light up the immediate area in front of your car, causing you to focus closer in front of your car instead of looking down the road.


OP, if you want something that'll actually help, get yellow bulbs for your foglights. I run yellow bulbs for my low beams, and I like them. It's a bit strange at first, but it helps me to see white lane markings on wet roads at night a lot better.

I run my fogs all the time on my STi. The stock headlights do a very poor job of lighting the road immediately in front of the car. My fogs fill that gap quite nicely.
