Do you know anyone who works in real estate?

I'm exploring career options here. So far, I've narrowed it down to:

Chinese medicine
Real estate
Chiropractor
Teacher (probably not until I'm older, though)
Marketing/Advertising

Something that would require working with people is always a plus... it gets lonely in front of a computer screen.

i know someone who works in industrial/commercial real estate. it's pretty high stress because the commissions are their only income and those types of properties are tougher to sell. the upside is that the prices are usually in the multi-millions so commissions are really high.

i would think residential would mean more sales but less money in commissions.

why teaching only when you get older? there's still a high demand for teachers(at least in nyc) and you get summers off and lots of vacation during the year. the only problem is the stinky pay.

That's just it... the stinky pay. 🙁 I have the energy and enthusiasm now, but I have a feeling I'll develop the wisdom and patience necessary to teach later on... so teaching is on hold for the moment, although I'll definitely be doing it someday.

of the careers you listed i think chiropractor is the lowest stress. you'd still need to build up a practice but i think your schedule would be the most flexible and the pay is good. though you can make your own schedule with real estate as well the income just isn't as steady. a friend of mine was a chiropractor and really enjoyed it until, ironically, he hurt his back and couldn't work anymore. 🙁

another friend of mine is in marketing and it's pretty high stress as they always have to do a lot of work during their campaigns so the work schedule is more erratic and can involve lots of late nights. however, they sure know how to party heartily. 🙂

my brother is a teacher(english/secondary ed) and he loves it. he's really passionate about his work and his kids. we went to see the matrix on opening night and all the his kids kept coming up to him to say hi and talk to him and he hung out chatting with them for a while. he doesn't make a lot of money but he doesn't spend a lot as he's still living at home so he can afford a lot of pleasantries like broadband, imac, digicam, digicamcorder, ipod, xbox, ps2, cannondale mtb, travel. he supplements his income during the summer by working at day camps. he even met kevin kline and phoebe cates and their kid one summer as he was the only counsellor that their kid was comfortable enough to talk to.

i don't know anyone who is in the chinese medicine field but i would think it would be similar in terms of schedule and pay and stress as chiropractor.

Wow... thanks for the great advice and thorough feedback! The only drawback I can think of re: the chiropractor option is the enormous debt I'll accumulate while in school. 🙁 It'll end up costing as much/even more than med school, according to the schools I've researched so far...

Chinese medicine.
So you basically would hustle asian people?

No, you hustle white people who think Asian culture is trendy.

You do NOT want to wait until you are old to become a teacher. If you are interested and want to do it, do it NOW. If you got a job making $60k in the next 5 years, do you really think you would be willing to toss it for something that pays $45k a little later? No way. Unless your "young job" ends up paying enough that you can save up and live comfortably on teacher-wage, you'll not likely make the jump.

But, teachers often get GREAT benefits and retirement packages. For instance, here in NJ, you put in 25 years, you retire with full benefits FOR LIFE, plus a pension. In other words, suck it up on teacher-wage (which really isn't all that freakin' bad), and moonlight/summer as whatever.

Retire when you are 50 with solid pension/insurance and then you can spend the rest of your days being an accupressurist or whatever else have you.

If you want to teach, don't wait.

my son-in-law has a calif. real estate license - it was easy to get.
in our town almost all the real estate gets sold by a small fraction
of the agents - they make a good living, but the remaining agents
have to work pretty hard to make an average living.

I know 2 people who do real-estate part time. They just had to get a license and now they show houses/condos on the weekends. They don't earn a single penny until they make a sale. It sucks, but it can pay off if you fall into a groove...

It's an option. I wouldn't do that sort of thing full-time, even if there were just a little commission regardless. Too much competition out there.

True... it's extremely competitive, especially in SoCal, where I'd like to work. Don't want to let that completely deter me though...

my gf has her real estate license and does loan processing from home right now. But will probably be going corporate ie etrade, ditech. i can give you her email address and you can discuss it with her if you like.

I can personally attest that real estate is a high stress career. In you can handle it though, it can be quite lucrative. Up to you. I hope this doesn't come out wrong... but it is well-known that attractive women do have an advantage as realtors. If you fit that bill, you might want to consider it.

Go with Chiropractor. It's an additional 4 years but I have a friend who went to Palmer in San Jose and he is in his 4th year of doing business as a Chiropractor and he is doing well........ lets just say he is pulling in low 6 figures and he is working in Canada where the money is not good. In the US he told me he can be making 3-4 time that amount :Q He really seems to enjoy it. Kind of weird since he was a political sciencec grad :Q

What the hell... so if I compete in the Miss America Pageant, I can get free tuition??

Miss America Pageant Scholarship: Full-tuition scholarships are available each trimester to winners of state pageants leading to the Miss America competition. Criteria: Must have won a state competition and have completed a year?s reign. To apply, a formal written request to the Chancellor of Palmer College is required, as well as proof of prerequisites for Palmer enrollment.

The hours certainly suck...

But the ones selling the BIG homes can make some serious cash with few sales. Trouble is it takes a while to work up to there.

Really? I've never heard of that before... but yes, right now I'm leaning towards either doing real estate or becoming a chiropractor. Thanks for the input...

my aunt does real estate...she likes it, except for the fact that commissions are the only way you make money and you have "goals" you need to meet when you're working under somebody, and until you're pretty established it's hard to say the least

my uncle does nursing, he works like 12 hours a day 3 times a week and has 4 days off (or somethign like that)

Real Estate is a notoriously unstable, cutthroat, and stressful market.

It pays handsomely if you do well, however. But keep in mind it is a LOT more complicated than it seems.
