do you know anyone who suffers from anti-social disorder?

Nocturnal

Lifer
how is life living with this disorder?

do all of these people turn into mass murderers like the websites say on the internet?

sorry for the questions. this forum is pretty much all geeks (no offense) and i heard that a lot of geeks are anti-social.

correct me if im wrong.

I had one in my Technical Communications class. He was in my group for our final project. Working with him was like working with a rabid donkey...he'd blatantly refuse work assigned to him even though it was in the area he agreed to cover. Cussed at the teacher and other students in class, walked out a couple times.. dude still owes me like $3 for printing out the project too.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he gunned down an office. He scared me.

geeks aren't anti-social... to be anti-social you have be cold and calculating. i don't have a copy of dsm-iv on me, but in genearl it's a "personality disorder involving a chronic pattern of self-centered, manipulative, and destructive behavior toward others".

geeks... maybe anxiety disorder? a little ocd?

where can you get the dsm-iv?

The DSM-V is undergoing final revisions now isn't it? I know it's on its way but wasn't sure if it was scheduled to be published this year.

There's more thjan one type of anti-social disorder

If I were you I'd worrry less about mass murderers and more about running into a person with ASPDO socialized type, usually found among con men and politicians 🙂

lol

you think the library would have it?

Anti-social personality disorder is VERY different from asocial personality traits or Cluster A personality disorders.

ASPD typically are angry, hostile, threatening, and demanding . . . damn sounds like T.x........ Anyway, usually before age 15 they are aggressive against people, cruelty to animals, setting fires, destroying property, deceitful (juvenile delinquent). After 15 they tend to violate the law, continue lying, deceit evolves in to con games as they learn to lie for a purpose (personal gain/revenge), impulsive, irritable often to the point of fights, general disregard for their safety and that of others, and often lack remorse for actions.

You have to be 18yo to get a formal diagnosis of ASPD. And yes our prison system has a bunch. Many people may have traits consistent with ASPD but it is a cluster of these traits and dysfunction in social, vocational, academic life that establishes a diagnosis.

Geeks are more likely Schizoid (detached, lack enjoyment from social relations, prefers social isolation, celibate, aloof from praise or criticism, emotionally restricted) or Schizotypal (paranoid, odd beliefs and thought patterns, unusual perceptions or speech, constricted affect - the outward appearance of their mood varies little with situations, eccentric behavior, lack of close friends, and excessive social anxiety. So Schizoids don't like other people, Schizotypals are odd so other people don't like them.

Let google do your digging for you 🙂

psych stuff

Ok, I know this guy who's the roommate of my roommate last year in the dorms. All he did was play Everquest 24/7. I kid you not! He'd play till the wee hours of the morning, sleep till 4 in the afternoon, then wake up and play again. He'd order pizzas and pop and crap food. He's about 6'2 and weighs almost 300lbs I bet, or maybe even more.

So anyways, a couple days ago, a lady he used to work with came in and asked if he wanted to go out and have (already paid) pizza with some friends. He just flat out refused, saying in a snotty tone that he's already made plans (Everquest and pizza again). He gets mad at her; she tells him that there's more to life than playing games on the computer and asks if he wants to go again. He still gives her the cold shoulder and she finally leaves. My roommate and I just sat there staring and didn't know what to say. I just kept thinking in my mind: "How the hell can you turn down FREE food?"

FREE FOOD == GOOD =D

Most if not all religious types. And when they do get together all they talk about is being...saved.

From your anecdote he's probably Schizoid but might be Avoidant . . . can't rule out passive-aggressive or self-defeating.

I knew one with a SERIOUS disorder. Hated anyone not of German descent and smeared almost everyone that I brought to every party.

"Adolf", I said..."We really need to get along with my friends or we will have to leave."

It really sucks because I like him a lot and wanted him to have fun but, everyone asked, "Who is that depressed kid you brought here?"

Really pissed me off! 😉

Narcissistic, Histrionic, and Obsessive-Compulsive (personality disorder not OCD, which is different). But remember just b/c they annoy the shyte out of you doesn't make it a personality disorder. THEY have to be dysfunctional.

well, i consider most people that annoy me to be flawed individuals 🙂

Could be but game addicts will still play the game with others and are not intentionally social isolated (Schizoid)
General issues with criticism leads to social isolation, and feelings of being socially inept, inferior, and unappealing (Avoidant)
Negative with passive resistance to change, protesting the unreasonable expectations of others, sulking, deliberate obstructive (PasAg)
Self-sabotaging, tends to defeat others efforts to help, yet complains about suffering, grudges against others, rejects pleasure (Self-def)

grandiosity and a sense of social specialness, fantasies of ideal personal qualities or unlimited power, excessive entitlement and need for admiration, tendency to exploit others, lack of empathy, arrogance and enviousness

With Evercrack though those "others" are online and not in realtime

Plus,as with any addiction, you would want to defer on the Axis II till 6 months after the client had been clean of the addiction in question

Actually, you can distinguish if his apparent personality disturbance is a symptom of a long-lasting disorder versus a relatively recent change (ala new game) by taking a good history. Regardless, you look for medical causes first, then substance (addiction in this context has not been clinically established with regards to diagnosis and treatment of gaming so there's no rationale for waiting six months in his case), then you look for comorbid or look-alike Axis I conditions (depression, OCD, ADHD, chronic adjustment d/o, and so forth) that you rule out before pouncing on a personality disorder. Waiting just increases the likelihood that you miss a correctable cause (medical) and extend the period of maladaptive behavior without treatment.

Actually I assumed you'd already ruled out any medical and simply presumed zero prior psych HX and didn't qualify my answer with exceptions...lol, it's too early in the morning .. btw, I think if anything most clinicians are too hesistant to dx on the axis II, can't count the number of times I'd intake somebody with so much on Axis I that the referer ran out of space to write on and "defer" on Axis II 🙂

btw, it's rather cool to run into anybody here who knows what The heck I was talking about considering the hour of the day

Most geeks do not have anti-social disorders, but rather social anxiety disorders.

My understanding is that people with anti-social disorders have absolutely no cooperation skills, and pretty much everything they do is intended to undermine society in some way.

Geeks do not necessarily have such destructive drives, they simply feel uncomfortable in social situations.
