Yeah, quite a few actually. Weird for someone who's never been arrested.
One guy was in for manslaughter for 13 years. A barfight went bad, the other guy fell and hit his head on the rail along the bottom of the bar, and died of a bleed in his brain.
Another guy hit a woman the night before her wedding (Great timing?) The accident would have happened anyway, she just ran in front of him, but he smelled of beer ("Just ONE occifer, I SWEAR!") and the test came back at .12 (A really big beer?), and then the dope doesn't take a plea bargain, and spends 10 years in prison.
Then there was my neightbor, who was loaded and going home from a night out partying. He runs over some poor newly arrived to the US guy riding his bike home from his job as a cook in a chinese restaurant, and drags him about 500', gets out, pulls him loose, and then drives off. There were several witnesses, and the cops were looking for him by dawn. He hid at his aunt's place, but the cops figured that out, and he went away for 5 years.
Then there's a dope I used to live across the street from, who was hired by a friend of mine, his cousin, to be his bookeeper for his contracting business. He was a CPA and my friend trusted him. Well, he tells my friend that he got a "fantastic" job offer in Chicago or Mineapolis, and quits and leaves town, really quickly, after 3+ years of working for him. One morning my friend is interviewing replacements, and the IRS swoops in, and tells him he owes at least 300K(Ended up about 500K all together) worth of income tax! His cousin had intercepted the letters from the IRS warning that he hadn't paid his taxes for 3 years! When it was all said and done, my friend had to sell everything, put a mortgage on his house, borrow money from his brothers and give a house he built to the IRS to get it all paid off. Oh, and just to show you what kind of guy the cousin is, my friend has been in a wheelchair for 30 years after being paralyzed in a car wreck! Then the FBI finds out he's involved with a kiddie porn site, but the only real evidence of his involvment was a few checks, and the FBI couldn't get his partner to rat him out. He's got about 3 years to go..and he hid the money someplace and he's still got part of it left.
Then the biggest idiot. I went to grade and HS with this genius. He decides to kill his old man and stepmom for their insurance money, and hires two morons he works with to do it for 1000 bucks each. Well, it all goes wrong, and not only don't they kill the targets, one of them gets shot by the dad, and both squeal like little piggies when the cops start asking questions. He ends up taking a deal for 15 years. He's got about 5 to go.
