When I bring the family to visit them, my in-laws slip me a $20 for gas before I leave.. And my wife's grandma gives us a roll of quarters she saved up. I hate to take it, but it would be insulting not to.

AT 23, Jason McGuinness lives a postcollege life in Manhattan that is very nearly typical. He works as a media research analyst, making about $30,000 a year. Sharing a two-bedroom apartment on the fourth floor of a walk-up building with a roommate on the Upper East Side, his portion of the rent is $1,100 monthly.

Holy crap!! The mortage to my first house was about as much as his portion of the rent and he earns less than half of what I make! No wonder he needs money from Mom & Dad.

the key is "subsidy arriving regularly"

i haven't gotten allowance since i graduated from high school

it is one thing to get some help if you have a crisis , but to get a check from mommy/daddy every month to pay half your bills? :Q don't these people have any pride?

only time i get money from my parents is on Christmas or my birthday. I made a webpage for my dad's business and he put $200 towards a gun I wanted to buy, but other than that, i don't get any free money from them.

hell, i pretty much bought everything except food and a few clothes here and there by myself when i got my 1st job at like 15.

I borrowed money from my parents to buy my car. I'm paying it back, though. It's interest free, of course.

Other than a few times during college and birthday/Christmas gifts, I pretty much stopped getting money from my parents when I got my first part-time job around the age of 16.

Since I was around 20 I've only recieved money......twice I think.
Once was cause I ended up in a bad way financially and things were looking grim (Unforseen bills, not poor mismanagement) and the other was to buy a house.
I only asked once. The downpayment on the house was a (nice!) suprise.

My mom's sister is in her 40's, and she's still living off of her parents. They are currently paying for her to goto school and they pay her rent and all kinds of BS. She works like 10 hours a week at some pet store. LOL My mom's other sister bought her son's house, and he's in his 30's and unemployed. I have a lot of losers in my family.

when I needed a few grands to pay for my car, I went to the bank for a loan and got declined. my mom yelled at me for not asking her for the loan when she found out. so I got the money from her and paid her back.

ive never gotten allowence or anything, ive always had to work for my money

though there are occasions where my dad will buy me the odd thing now and then, usually things to help me out at uni or something, or he'll borrow my car for like the morning, and then return it with a full tank of gas (even though he left wth 1/4) just little things like that

if i need it for college, he has no problems getting it for me (ie this year i had to get a desk for my room so i could work...we went to ikea picked a big cheap desk...he paid, again books for subjects he usually chips in etc)

sometimes gives me a little bit of cash when i go back to uni, to tide me over untill i get my student loan in.

in a few years, i hope to return the favour by helping my mum n dad with things as they will be retired by the time i leave uni and get a good job. probably help them finally pay off the mortgage or something, then the house will be theirs.

Same.

I know a few kids like that. It is pretty ridiculous. They are spoiled rotten too.

 Like you know anything about other people's families and financial situations. Right, he would have been *SO* much better off had he got the loan from the bank instead.

My parents gave me money to pay the downpayment on my brand new Civic. I am 31. I have a good job though, and make payments/insurance on my own.

I don't see nothing wrong with it.

I know a few.

It's becoming increasingly harder for a young professional to make it by themselves, especially in metropolitan cities like new york. Just because someone gets a few hundred dollars a month from parents doesnt necessarily mean he's a lazy bum.

The way our family thinks about it, it's family wealth. We all manage our own finances, but there'll never be a case where we wont help each other. If I got laid off and couldnt make mortgage payments, my parents would take over until I could again. If my brother ever needed money for down payment on a house and I had some spare, I'd give it to him with no expectation of repayment. It's a lot easier to 'stand up' these days if your family's mindset is 'ours' and not 'yours' and 'mine'.
