The only one I know is the one that used to beat up my niece, until she dumped his ass.

I'm PART native American, but you can call me anything you like! 😉

Columbus wasn't the first explorer to cross the ocean and reach what he deemed America... Afro-Phoenicians were. In his writings, good ol Chris went into detail about how how he intended to turn people into slaves.

In 1493, Columbus rewarded his crew with women they could rape, and his men trafficked young girls as sex slaves. On a separate but somewhat related note, the Pilgrims/Puritans sold the survivors of the Pequot War to Bermudan slave traders in 1637...

But that sort of stuff doesn't make it to US history books, now does it.

People knew the earth was round for well over a thousand years before Mr. Columbus. They didn't just know the earth was round, but they knew the radius of it! I will find the guy's name who found the radius of the Earth (well that we know anyways) a little later. But he basically measured the angle of a shadow in a well in two different cities durring Summer Soltice where he knew the distance between the two cities.

Anyways, about the Natives. Just about everyone of my friends and a lot of my family (non-blood Anuts and Uncles and Cousins) are Native American. Not one of them care if you say indain, actually many of them think the term Native American is stupid. So you just never know.

My 16th doesn't mind. In fact pround of the heritage. I don't look it and nobody knows unless I bring it up. Never had any predjustice about it, but my father caught some. When he was working for his company like 15-20 years ago he was listed as a minority. One day they did a "We love minorities..see" picture for press and he was included in it and the photographer told him to wear a headress, he also told the black chemist to pick up a fro, real @sshat. But never had anything myself, though my grandfathers advice to him was "You look white son, stick with that and you will have no problems." apparently he had a lot of problems with a full blooded cherokee as a grandmother.

Who in history was altruistic, Dezign? What culture did not enslave at one time or another? Is Columbus and the rest of Europe evil simply because they came out on top? Because if you want to match atrocity for atrocity, NO culture is innocent. There have been only winners and losers.

Enough with the smear BS already.

And there is NO conclusive proof any other people besides the Vikings had crossed the Atlantic before Columbus.

Many times in history knowledge has been discoovered, only to be lost again. For all intents and purposes the culture of the day believed the Earth was flat, and this belief was endorsed by the Catholic church.

No, but to point out Columbus' faults and to say they overshadow his accomplishments implies it.

It's not that "everybody does it" it's that no culture is innocent. We pick on Columbus and the Europeans because they won... and for no other reason.

😕

WTF???

I do not condone Columbus' actions, or the mindset of the day. I am saying to point out the faults and say they negate the accomplishments can be done for EVERY culture, but is only done for Europeans today. Why? Because they came out on top and NOT because they committed any more atrocities than any other culture.

I'm on the Cherokee roll. But, I'm not all indian. I don't take offense to being called any indian/white racist slur. People are just too damn sensative.

"We" pick on Columbus because he won? I don't believe you are included in your collective "we", so you have no right speaking for anyone else.

I agree, no culture I'm immediately aware of is 100% innocent (as all desire power/spreading their morals/beliefs/etc. as you are attempting to)... however, I don't respect Columbus because of his atrocities towards women, etc. Not because he "won".

You may respect his "great accomplishments", but I certainly do not. I have my reasons, you have yours.

List any society's accomplishments, and I will list atrocities that society committed. Does that negate any and all accomplishments throughout history?

Columbus, while far from altruistic, made a great accomplishment by opening up the new world to the old in a time the feat could really mean something. For that, he deserves praise.

I disagree, considering what the outcome was.

Were you serious when you said you were Native? I'm surprised you feel this way about Columbus, if you are.

The outcome happened not because the Europeans were "more evil" than the natives, but because they had advanced technology. Were the situation reversed, the outcome would simply be turned the other way around. The Indians were not the tree-hugging altruistic lovable hippies we make them out to be. They were warlike and constantly at war with each other, often wiping out entire cultures.

And most of what happened was beyond our control. We had no idea our diseases would kill them, or how they were spread.

And yes, I'm native. I was born here, that makes me native. No less native than those who call themselves "Native Americans" and gain protected status from it.

Me.

I think there is a difference when someone says "indian" as opposed to "an indian". Native American = an Idian ... I guess. Most people recognize "an idian". But even Native American is too general, I prefer to call myself Eastern Shawnee.

You know what I mean by Native. Don't be like that. :frown:

Regardless, it doesen't make our genocide right. Even our government admits that.

Genocide is never right. I agree. However, the fact remians that it was a common theme among cultures of the day. BOTH cultures were previously guilty of it. And had the Indians had the technology, and we didn't, do you really think anything would have been different?
