Do you know any Native Americans?

If so, are they offended by being referred to as "Indians"?

Two of my Native friends are VERY much against being referred to as "Indians" and take it as a racist insult. The other refers to himself as American Indian.

my friends didn't mind being called "indian". i think with most of my friends, it's ok to call them something that might seem derogatory (once in a while) as long as you aren't using a hateful or stupid context.

btw, none of my friends were native american

so a natural question to ask is:

why do native americans called indians? is it a mere coincidence? how about indians from india

I think Columbus referred to the Natives as "Indians" first, because he thought he'd landed in India.

wtf? A casino...made out of Winnebagos?....8===D~~......

My SO is part Cherokee and identifies himself as "Native American". I don't think the term Indian offends him, but as we typically use that here to refer to East Indians, it would be confusing.

there is probably 50:1 (or higher) ratio of native americans to indian indians here, (they are most prevalent non-white race in my city) so typically indian means native american, and 'east indian' means indian with blood roots to india.

indian is supposed to be non-pc now though, but i never was all that PC.

most of them refer to each other as brother or beloved patriot or muck
