Do you keep upgrading your computer to....

I stopped playing games a few years ago and haven't upgraded since. Gaming is really the only reason anyone needs to upgrade all the time.

Yes, I still do to some extent. I just bought a new CPU (Opteron 170) in November, mainly because I was still on an Athlon XP and a dual-core CPU helps out a lot when doing stuff like video encoding (I watch/record a lot of HDTV). Got my video card (6800GT) in July of 2004, I might end up upgrading it this summer though.

I quit doing it....got too expensive and it was stupid. I havea a skt 754 3400 with a gig of memory and a raptor with 6800gt. That better hold me for at least another year or so. It has been rock solid stable in my p160 case.

I don't play that many games (all that I play right now is GTR and BF2) so my system is adequate (2.4 P4, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9700) enough to run the games at like 800x600. I don't really care so much about all the fancy stuff or running at 1600x1200 (although being able to run at 1280x1024 would be nice since that's the native of my LCD, but BF2 looks fine at 800x600), so no, I don't keep upgrading my computer. I got the system more or less as-is about 2 1/2 years ago and the only thing I'd remotely consider upgrading would be the video card, but what I've got works well enough for now. I'll probably try to squeeze another year at least out of it.

not since i realized i'd rather play video games in 5.1 on a 50" DLP from the comfort of my couch, with the ease of just poppping in a brand new game and playing it within 15 seconds.

i haven't upgraded since I got my athlon xp 2400+ (when they were pretty new) and my saphire radeon 9500 np card that i can software hack to make it a 9700.

I upgrade every 18months by selling off my old one and using the $ plus a couple hundred to build a new one. My wife always wonders why I keep upgrading that often, but has accepted it.

I have pretty bleeding edge. Dual core Opteron and 7800GT, but I bought them all on sale.

I upgrade often because it's cheaper than letting a comp dwindle to obsolescence. When you upgrade once a year you get a large percentage of the price you paid for your old parts. You still end up dropping $200 a year, but that's the equivolent of waiting 5 years and then buying a brand new computer for $1000 and getting nothing for your old one....plus you've been using an old computer for the past few years.

My main reason for going dual core is to run my multitrack software which is dual core optimized. Makes a big difference. Otherwise I'd have been fine with my 939 3000+.

whatever it takes to run a game I really want to play. For UT2k4, I upped to a 9800 Pro... and for UT2k7, I'll do the same.

It's about right for the usual upgrading rate for me anyway.

I avoid the bleeding edge, the price/performance ratio sucks. I do upgrade something occasionally to have decent performance (generally for games) though.

Same here, then I discovered the money pit of HTPCs. And you thought gaming upgrades were bad...

eh tried it time past time. A64 3700 was the best processor I could get for my S754 mb and added a 6800GT. I think my cpu would be a bottleneck for the 7800 series but at least I have peace of mind knowing I can't really upgrade it anymore.

I try to stay within sight of the bleeding edge, but IME you can get 90% of the performance for 50% of the price so thats what I shoot for in my upgrades... that last 10% is just too much more to play games.
