Do you keep empty boxes your stuff came in?

Cleaning out the closet today and noticed just how many empty boxes I have... digital camera boxes, stereo receiver I got for Christmas, etc...

Guess I'm a pack rat.

I keep them because I will probably be selling the item one day and I always like to have the original box for when I sell my things.

Depends on what it is. If it costs > $200, I'm going to keep the box unless it is huge.

I also keep every box for a buffer period, say 2 months, just in case I need to return it for whatever reason.

for electronics i keep the boxes, as usually the warranty requires it to send back for repairs. but, i only keep one type of box. i have 5 17" dell laptops and 4 15.4" laptops. i have one box for each size for shipping in case i need it, as well as 2 boxes for the two sizes of towers i use. cameras and small electronics get kept for a year and tossed.

I wish I still have some of the boxes. I just did a purge earlier this year and now I will have to pay for them since I am selling stuff. 🙁

Yes.

Occassionally, when I am cleaning my shit, I will get mad and say to myself "the f*ck is wrong with you, why do you keep all these boxes". I ended up filling the recycling bin with plastic packaging for cables. What good could come from keepng those...

I happilly keep my huge 24" monitor box, PS3 box and PS3 RMA box though.

Ditto. It's like washing your car before you put it up for sale - you'll get a few extra bucks most likely.

for a little while. at least a month or two, not usually longer. i bought a printer last month and kept the box
my dad bought a printer, pitched the box immediately...but needed to send the printer back :-/

As am I! 😱

I used to keep all sorts of stuff. Now I throw stuff out all the time. I probably waste a little bit of money, but it sure beats having a house full of crap.

Also helps for us people who move too often. 😛

If I had the room I would but I lack the room, so I usually keep them for about a month then if I don't have to return anything I throw them all out in the recycling.

Though with luck, its usually then where something break.

It depends mostly on the cost of the item if I was to resell it, and how big the boxes and packing materials are. I kept the box from my 11 year old dual DVD player, and packed it away in it recently. I hope to sell it for at least the fact it plays HDCDs and decodes regular CDs at the higher bitrate, too. Sounds great with CDs in it. Receiver boxes get kept for upgrades. Or speaker boxes, if they are not too massive. I had to toss my giant sub boxes and my main tower speaker boxes because of the massive factor. And folding them up dont help a lot, because the styrofoam in them was massive, too, and needed a home then. So in the trash it went. Just like my 2 massive LCD boxes. If you ever need to ship that massive stuff, you can get some other giant box and just modify it later for shipping, like a washing machine or fridge box or something.

I used to because on the resale it made the item more desirable...now the extra few bucks isn't worth the storage 'cost'

This.

I keep them for a few months in case something goes wrong, and usually with games, etc I keep the original packaging... people seem to pay a lot more if I offer the box with it for some reason.

Dude, I have boxes from the 70s still. Have my first Atari 2600 box and pretty much every box since then. In fact, I have an unused bedroom with empty boxes. My office is full of boxes too.
