Have to keep like 20 or 40 in the cars. I've been to gas stations that say their CC broke down or use that as an excuse to make people pay cash. Always so loose change for parking too. Also I suggest keeping some water, granola bars, blanket and some tools.
I got caught like that once actually. I got in my car after a night shift and noticed that for whatever reason my gas gauge was red lined, could have sworn I had more gas. Got siphoned or something? not sure. But I had to make it to a gas station stat, no time to let the windows defrost. So I drove to the station closest to my house with the line of thinking that if I stall at least I don't have as far to walk. Did not have enough gas to start going around trying to find a gas station that's open and just hoped for the best that the one I was going to would be.

Got there, and they were just opening up, and told me their debit machine was not working. Crap. I asked if I can pay at the pump, but they were not sure it would work, I tried anyway, but it gave a generic error, most stations don't even set that up. So my only option at this point was to find an ATM to take money, went to the convenience store across the street, their ATM was out of cash. WTF! So I ended up being able to do cash back if I bought something but with a $20 limit.

$20 of gas does not get you very far, if it even moves the needle. I put that in anyway and it was enough to make it home and then back to the station later. If I had like $80 in cash in the car I could have filled up.

I actually got caught like that recently again but at least the machine was working so I could use my credit card. I'm starting to wonder if my gauge needle randomly gets stuck or something. I really need to try to fill up before it gets past half way, anyway. It's not good to let it go down to near empty all the time especially in winter.

I suspect an independent gas is dicking with my fuel gauge. I'm on stage 3 of my test. I'm on my third tank of BP, and my next available fillup will be from the indy. No problems on BP fuel, but my gas gauge will peg high, low, or drift around in the middle after using the indy fuel. Might be a coincidence, cause I can't think of a reason for it to happen aside from maybe a weird fuel additive(thought they were more or less the same), but having an unreliable gauge is a pita.

Hmmm I would actually expect BP fuel to be the first to be an issue, it would just randomly start leaking out for no apartment reason. :p
