Do you install Java 7 or 8?

I still see Java Runtime Environment 7 being updated. Why would one want to install the older Java? Maybe there's something I don't know....

I don't install it until there is something specific that require it and even then I look at what they require. IE some business banks would require 7 but not 8

Well in the DELL Driver installer list, it is mentioned as a pre-requestie to have Java installed, maybe one of the utilities of the drivers requires it, but they don't say Java 7 or Java 8 that's why I asked for your professional opinion

IF it is absolutely necessary I always install the latest version. Although sometimes due to compatibility, 7 is required.

I guess I'll stick to 8, I tried installing v7 and now the plugin wasn't installed in Firefox thus sites that require Java don't work.

Except for a few lingering apps (mainly internal business apps), Java in the browser is dead and never coming back.

And there are differences between Java 5, 6, 7, 8, etc., on occasion an app only works in one version and must be updated to work in a newer version.

I wouldn't install it, especially not if you specifically require it. I'm not sure why a driver installer would need java.

The last time I used it was in 1998 I think. There was some offspring chat thing that needed it, then I started using mIRC instead.
