Do you hide a spare key outside your house?

Yeah, I bought one of those combination lock boxes and mounted it somewhere most people wouldn't know to look.

Note that even if someone found it and managed to pry the key out of there, he would still have to content with the alarm system.
 
Naw, I live an apartment, though I guess that doesn't necesarily preclude one from hiding a key. I could probably hide one by my back porch (I have a small concrete porch and a backdoor leading to it at my new place <3). I'm always extremely cognizant about having keys ANYTIME I step out the door though, so I don't really see a need. If I had to, I could just buzz one of my neighbors and they'd let me in.
 
Forget those fake rocks. Just use a real one.

You don't even have to cut it or make a hole. You can open a window using the rock; no key required.

Correct..and wrong! I read a few years back that's easiest way to gain entry to a house since the door is usually unlocked and a simple interior door. If I had an attached garage I'd replace that door with a exterior grade door and a good deadbolt. Breaking into a garage is pretty easy. The opener doesn't provide much security.
 
It's not secure to leave a spare key outside your house, so my spare key is safely locked away inside.

Actually, I've done this with certain car conveniences that are supposed to help out in emergencies or annoying situations. I've got some lock de-icer that I keep in the glovebox for no explicable reason, since if I ever need it, I can't access it. Ditto for the glass smashing hammer I keep in the car in case I drive off a pier and need to smash my window and swim to safety; that's in the trunk. But if I'm ever kidnapped and locked in the trunk of my own car, I'm set! Frankly, that seems just as likely as crashing into a lake.
 
Sure it's secure. There are a million places to hide a key on a given property. A thief isn't going to look for a key. They're going to kick open a door or enter through an open window.
 
I don't lock doors. No care.

Life's too short to carry around keys and fumble with locks.
 
I don't even have keys. Makes for some stressful times when I go out of town for a couple days.
 
More importantly, how many of you just don't lock your doors?

I know a guy, maybe two, who came from a small town and prided the fact that he never locked his doors.

even in Smalltown USA, I couldn't imagine that... just seems like it'd invite trouble (ie: drunk guy coming home from the bar... friend/taxi drops him off in front of a neighbor's house instead of his own, he enters assuming it's his house, neighbor thinks his house is getting broken into and shoots the drunk guy)
 
Nope, got a z-wave dead bolt so just unlock it from my phone. Can use a pin number if your phone is dead or a key as plan C.

I grew up in rural Ohio, and we never locked the doors, keys left in the ignition of vehicles.

Years ago, some fuckwit where I lived left the front door unlocked. Some lady looking for a party walked right in thinking it was us.

I came from a small town in the U.P. of Michigan and even when I'm home, my doors are locked, both deadbolt and regular lock (I live in an apartment). Growing up, my parents didn't lock the doors during the day when we were home, but at night and when we were gone even for an hour to town they were locked. No sense being stupid about it, IMO.
 
I want to but keep forgetting to do it, I should get on that. Best spot I bet no one would think of: telephone NID. A flat screw driver or some spare change should be easy enough to come by in a situation that arises. If by chance a thief does think of checking there, I have an alarm system anyway. Downside is if they do break in and manage to steal stuff anyway insurance would not cover the losses as there is no actual sign of break in.

I keep my door locked all the time if I'm home unless I know for sure I'm going out. I do it to force in the habit so when I'm lying in bed I'm not trying to second guess if I locked it.

Does anyone actually leave the house with open windows especially on the first floor in a populated area? They deserve to get robbed.
