Do you help your employer after getting canned?

No, not me. I'd have too much pride in telling my boss where to go and what to do when he gets there. 😀

However, I've seen this happening at a former company I was working for, and all around me when it comes to getting rid of IT staff.

Basically, I'm seeing IT or technical people lose their jobs, but are then all too happy to cooperate with their former employer when it comes to technical help with their former job - for free.

If I willingly leave a compnay and move on, which I've done on many occasions, I cooperate as much as I can to help my replacement acclimate themselves. However, if I get downsized to save money, or terminated for no performance reasons, and my former boss were to call me and ask how to do something or fix a server, I sure as heck wouldn't help them for free. If it were something I had customized, I might feel obligated to provide them with information on what I did, but I sure as heck woulnd't help them administration or support. At least not for less than $1000 an hour. However, I seem to be alone on this noting the attitudes of other IT staff I've seen get canned.

I realize some employers hold unemployment or bonuses over your head, but neither seem like legitimate black mail here.

I did once a long time ago after my former employer begged me to fix his computers. When I was finished the fscker had security escort me out. Talk about ownage!

Yeah I don't get that. I mean I feel bad about leaving an employer willing out in the dust, but even then, it isn't MY job to make sure they are ready to deal with me leaving. That is what two weeks notice is for; if they can't get their ****** together before then, too dreaking bad.

You really know people who've done computer help for an employer that fired them for free?

Jesus H. Christ, that's pathetic.

wow, i would NEVER help en employer for free after they fired me.
either pay me a nice amount to do it or find someone else.

I did (for an old internship) and I got screwed. I won't make the same mistake again.

**EDIT**
I wasn't fired though, it was an internship, but I still got royally screwed.

nope...and i'm in agreement with your stance on it

If I quit, I'd probably go back and help. But not for free.

If they fired me, they'd have two choices; consultant fee of 3 to 5 times my old wage depending on how much I hate them, or they can go fvck themselves.

i had one place call me to fix a problem.since i was young and neive i said sure no problem and fixed it. since i did leave on really good tearms with the company. trouble is they called a 2nd time and i fixed it the 3rd time i said sure for $50/hr and that stoped it.

Me and my boss had a bad split.

I had setup his store's computers and moved them from normal cash registers to computers with POS software. He really didn't know anything about it, and didn't have anybody else at the store that knew how to troubleshoot the software or computers.

After the split, about 2 months down the road, he called me, sounding sincere, and asked me if I could stop by and look at the system. He could hear me laughing as I hung up the phone on him.

After 5 years of hard work I got a few minutes one morning to clean out my office. My boss didn't even bother to ask in which county I had pending work and I wasn't in the mood to volunteer any info or do ANY work for free.

There are a few people in SW Ohio that still don't have: deeds and/or mortgages properly recorded, property taxes paid, mtg. releases recorded.
Now 6 months later I bet her a$$ will be on the line once those customers start asking questions.

My wife was once in a similar situation, although she left voluntarily. She gave a month's notice she was quitting and they did nada about training a replacement.

Three days after she left they called and asked her to come in and help them with a complex order and she said she would have to charge $100 an hour (5 times her pay). They agreed! Took her two hours.

Next week, they called again but said they could only pay $50/hour so she declined. They called back in an hour and said they'd pay the $100 an hour. Took her four hours that time.

They never called back again, which suited her fine.

If she had been canned, she would have asked for the same amount, but would have insisted on a check on the spot instead of trusting them to mail one to her.

Don't be shy about asking for a ton of money.

I helped a former employer. I was laid off along with others so no hard feelings. I just charged them out the ass.

The parent company is shutting down my location, so all of us are out jobs. You can bet your sweet ass that I won't be providing them with anything for free.

lol

I agree with posters above that i would not help at all unless i was generously compensated. Too bad i dont have any skills that would not be able to be replaced 🙁

i still talk to my old boss from my first job and help him out on phone if he needs. but thats because i left on my own and screwed him royally by doing so. then again the company didn't give me a counter offer. whatever.

happened to me... the department I worked for when I was in college called me back one day to ask for help. had a bad split with the head manager. told them I charged 85/hr with a 2 hr minimum (which was about 10x what they were paying me), they never called me again.

such is life I suppose.
