If you do it this way, you're an ass. If nobody is behind me I'll back in but I'm not going to inconvenience people like you described. I used to back in at my old job in a crowded parking garage (but I got there at 6:45am before most anyone else) so I got pretty good at it. The parking garage was very cramped quarters so backing out was tricky (requiring a 3 point maneuver if you didn't angle yourself perfectly the first time).

if no one is behind you, I can't imagine anyone would criticize you.

in a crowded parking lot, though, I say that if someone was that concerned with not being able to safely reverse out of a parking space, just park further into the lot where you can either pull forward or back into a spot without holding up other drivers.

in my parking lot at work, I'll usually pull forward into a space but then have to back into it to get my parking spot back after leaving for lunch. it's a low-traffic lot, though... in the muni lot at home, on the other hand, I always pull into a space because it's a crowded parking lot and there's nearly always at least a couple cars around (if not looking for a space than using the lot as a shortcut)

You probably stand in the middle of an aisle of a supermarket and don't realize or care you're blocking the path either. Or you drive slowly looking for a destination instead of moving to the side while cars are behind you trying to get by.

No? Then don't park backwards if there's people waiting to get by either.
So, you don't back out?

Reverse is pretty much guaranteed at some point in the process unless the spot in front of you is open.

If you can smoothly back in to your spot in one attempt then I will happily wait. If not I will give you a look and possibly flail my arms around for a second or two.

Yes, everyone is a dumbass EXCEPT you (and the 8 or so people who agreed with you).

If it were the smart & safe thing to do and we had statistics to back it up, we would change. So far I haven't seen any studies on this and seeing as I have never once hit someone backing up (I can only assume you have several times as you seem to be very scared of doing so again) I can't imagine it's a major problem. and if it IS a major problem, contact your local government to try and do something about it.

assuming that the cars already parked there haven't just pulled in and are waiting to exit their doors, in that situation the high trunk-line view from my rear window would not be as safe as pulling in straight because I would not be able to easily see people exiting their vehicle.

I generally avoid pulling into a spot where people are actively loading/unloading regardless of direction. It's just common courtesy.

Wow the hate for reversing into a spot. Yes if you can't hit it dead center on the first try, it can get annoying to watch those people. And to the complaint about forcing others to back up, how friggen closely are you following in the parking lot!!!!!

seems like it's pretty standard hereabouts to leave next to no space between a car when you're going <5 mph in a parking lot, because you don't need much space to come to a halt and there's no reason to expect someone to randomly shift into reverse.

Probably a big city vs small town thing.

Well I guess as an always reverse parking person, I always give that space in case it's needed. Don't see need to tailgate no matter how slow one is going.

If there's someone behind me, I'll either try to lose them or I'll just drive directly into the spot. Typically those in a hurry assholes wont give you enough room to actually back in anyway. If I'll be parked there long I'll let them pass then back out and then back in. That way when I come back to my car (which will be covered in snow) it will make coming out easier. You can brush it all you want but you're never going to get it 100% clear so at least driving out when visibility is low is much safer than trying to back out. The road/parking lot may also not be plowed so you don't want to back out then have to stop to put it in forward, as you could get stuck.

The only real time I bother to back in is at sporting events, etc where I know there will be lines in the parking lot. Far easier to force your way into line pull out forward than trying to reverse out. Other than that I pull through once in awhile. I don't have any issues backing out of spots and there is more room going out than in.

I feel like the outrage comes from the fact that we're not used to it, but if you look anywhere else in the world, it's rather common and you get good at it.

Heck it's not even hard to back in. I have to back in slower than I would pull in, but I've never missed a spot. I in fact find that I'm more often centered better because you're already in a more optimal position to center yourself whereas pulling in, you initiate the turn wherever is convenient. Sometimes for spots at end of the aisle or at an awkward angle, you will park poorly pulling in. Backing up, while it takes more time, sets you up at a better spot so that when you do back in, you're likely not going to be an idiot that's all on the line or 2 inches away from the car on the right but 6 feet from the car on the left.

And most importantly it's safer. Far safer to pull OUT of a parking spot where you the driver are closest to the aisle. Given that the majority of parking lot crashes are because of reversal, it feels far more comfortable and safer as a driver of a hatchback IMO to pull out.

With that said, feel free to pull in park in Hong Kong all you want. You'll be regarded as a retard.

I would probably back in more often if it wasn't for the fact I'm not able to 100% account for the extra 4-5" of trailer tongue and ball on my truck. I should really take it off, but the lock is rusted and I don't have a hacksaw.

Edit: The only time I always back in is at my apartment. Unless there's nobody parked on the curb, in which case I just jump the curb and drive into the spot.

Someone did this to me in a parking garage at the mall the other day. 3 cars on the opposite side in front and 4 cars (including me) behind him. All 4 of us had to back up (this took about 30-60 seconds as the cars directly behind the car behind us wasn't paying attention). Meanwhile the other 3 cars can't get by on the other side cause this fuck head in front has shoved his front end 1/2 way into their lane. Yeah it was a decently close spot to the door, but just pick a different fucking spot next time and dont be a wise and beautiful woman.

Somebody tried pulling this shit on me once at a mall parking lot. I refused to back up and I actually crept closer to them, then laid on the horn. They got the message and drove on.

After 3 years of testing, I can definitely say backing in to a parking spot is superior.

Nose of car facing out of the space whenever I can. It is much easier and quicker when leaving the space. And in a lot parking lots, you can usually go into a drive out spot from the aisle next to it. So you just drive into it nose first and leave the same way.

How did we end up with two threads on this one issue active at the same time? That's what I want to know o_O

For sure the real question is why is it considered difficult to back into a space in the USA but not elsewhere?
I asked in one of the other threads but nobody had any idea!
