I always head out park. Today at the Trader Joe's parking lot the dude behind me raised up his hand because he had to wait for me as I backed into the slot. When I saw him raise up his hands in my rear view, I backed in even slower. Gave me this look as he was driving by, so I raised up my hands - come at me bro

I park how I want to park. Wait like everybody else

it's a dick move in a packed parking lot, if it's not really that full or busy then I wont care how you park. But when you just waste time so you can park exactly the way you want while getting in the way of 5+ other cars and taking twice as long kinda pisses me off.

You probably stand in the middle of an aisle of a supermarket and don't realize or care you're blocking the path either. Or you drive slowly looking for a destination instead of moving to the side while cars are behind you trying to get by.

No? Then don't park backwards if there's people waiting to get by either.

Exactly. I like to back into a parking space but if its busy in the parking lot I would not do that because its not considerate for others trying to get through.

It depends on the situation.

In an event (like a sporting event) where I know backing out will be more difficult that backing in...then yes.

If its easy and both spots are open, then yes I pull into the front spot.

I work with a bunch of people that have that "military-like plan an escape route". They parked head out, even when our parking lot had angled spots and they had to pull out going the wrong way...that's crazy
(They finally changed our parking lot to 90 degree parking)

Usually I'll park head first when there's people behind me waiting. If I have time, I'll park head out, especially if I'm in my truck. But if I'm in my truck, I'm looking for a few empty spots clustered together, and drive through head first to the next stall where I'm facing head out. Makes it easier and no one cares since I'm so far away from the store.

What is it about pickup truck drivers that makes them susceptible to backing into parking spots?

Is it for a quick getaway? Or because backing _out_ of a parking space is more difficult than backing _into_ one?

I don't get it.

Exactly, it also causes other problems. Your drivers side door is now against mine. Back-in parkers are never good drivers (but thinks they are, so much so that I suspect that deciding to back into a parking spot is a symptom of not being able to properly drive) and so end up in the spot at an odd angle, or has to take 10 goes at it to be in the lines at all.

You park in handicap spaces while handicap people make handicap faces. You driver really slow in the ultra fast lane, while people behind you are going insane. You use public toilets and piss on the seat, and walk around in the summertime saying 'how about this heat'.

Mostly habit for me. Now that manufacturers make rear view cameras for trucks, it's not that big of a deal. But before, I just always found it easier to back in, pull out vs the other way.

Yup, this. it's a lot easier to back out of a spot than back in. I also agree that if there's no one around then go ahead and park whatever way you prefer. Another thing that grates my spine is people who see a nice spot (close to the door), getting ready to become open so they decide to block the entire row while waiting for the person to load in all their bags, unlock the car, start the car and back out. Jesus F Christ, are you that lazy and inconsiderate to actually have to walk a whopping 50-100ft by parking further down the row?. I usually will blast my horn at the lazy assholes that pull that crap.

Usually nose in when in my own car in town. Always nose out when out in the sticks. Always nose out in the company truck. I also tend to park well away from the entrance where the lot isn't so crowded.

If I'm next to some mammoth sized SUV or panel van I'll back in, or pull through a spot just so I'm not backing out blind. I've got a small hatchback and can't see through/over a lot of cars that dwarf me. It's safer to pull out when your nose is already out.

Head in so I can put all the shit I buy into the trunk where it belongs.

It only takes me a couple of more seconds to back into the spot.

It only takes 1 unseen child to come running by that you didn't see backing out to forever ruin everybody's lives

Deal with it haters

What do you stomp on the gas when backing out? Go slowly and you'll be fine.

I think you'll save as many kids as I will save crawling babies in front of my car. Plus darwin award.

Truth is that probably one of the most stressful times behind the wheel for me is that 10 seconds you are trying to get backed out of a very busy parking lot. Cars are bigger, and more blind spot heavy than ever. Trying to see out the back if you are between two Tahoes is border line impossible.

People are as impatient as every and hauling ass down isles trying to snipe spots. Look one way, look the other and by the time you start backing out somebody is coming the other direction at 40 MPH.

People are also as oblivious as ever. Yapping on a phone behind the wheel. Walking down the middle of the row while texting. Ect. When you are trying to watch one direction some body 10 years ago who wasn't previously glued to a cell phone would have stopped walking and let you back out. Now they'll just keep heads down and keep on going unless you happen to stop for them.

My head isn't on a swivel, and I don't have x-ray vision. It's just easier pulling out lots of times.

When I had a car I usually just pulled in. Now that I have a truck I find myself almost exclusively trying to back into spots when I can. I probably do about 80% back in.

There are some city's that are switching their parking to back in parking along the busier business districts (vs pull in, back out). Unless I'm forgetting, they had a few studies that showed that while it was more annoying to people, at least at first, overall, it was safer. When backing in, there's not a lot of area where unexpected things can happen. But, backing out into traffic meant several things - one, you were exposed to traffic while unloading things into your trunk (the same is true in a parking lot).

There was more that had to do with the turn radius - again, it favored backing in vs. backing out.

And, as said above by someone, pulling out into a busy area is easier (and safer) than backing into a busy area.

Most parking lots are angled parking here, so you have to be a bit of a tard to back in.

I don't get it.

It's harder to back out, especially in a small parking lot. I was wondering the same thing until my buddy who drives a rather large truck told me. He's gotten so good at it that he parks faster back in now.
