Do you have/use a handheld GPS for hiking etc?

I've had handheld GPS units for more than 20 years and my current one is the Garmin 60CSx. When I go hiking I use it and save the cellphone battery in case I have an emergency and need to call for help. Of course, there's many places you can't get cellphone coverage, but you'd be surprised just where in the middle of nowhere you can get a signal.

The Garmin 60CSx has a uSD card slot that you can store maps on. I will generally preload waypoints before I go hiking and store/mark my starting point and any other point of interest or navigation as I hike. You can also use the bread crumb feature to backtrack.

Here is an idea if there is cell service where you are and you have a smartphone or tablet.

Open this Gmap4 link (I am the developer) in your browser:
http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php

Then touch Menu ==> My Location.
The map will center where you are (assuming your device has a GPS chip).

To see a high resolution topo map, touch the button that lets you change the basemap and select "t4 Topo High".

The Gmap4 homepage has a FAQ, examples, quick start info (in the Help file) and more to quickly get you up to speed.

Yes, that's a natural reaction. But if you take a look you will see (in the Help file) that Gmap4 is part of my way to "pay it forward" to honor strangers who have helped me in the past. It really is free-no-strings-attached for noncommercial use.

And since the OP and others posted about GPS and topo maps, certainly the content I posted fits the theme of the thread.

When I was stationed in Germany, we were in the woods for an escape and evasion course. We had to navigate to a point about 10 miles to the east of us.

been on a course like this when i was in the air force but it was at Fort Huachuca arizona and was 4 points about 7 miles apart, we did it in 2 man teams. they gave us a PRC radio and a few parachute flares to use if we got really lost. heheh.

While on on the course and keeping an eye out for blacktail rattlesnakes a flock of doves flushed out of a bush and scared the living shit out of me.

Watch the Hot Deals forum for a sale on the Lumia 520 or 521. The Nokia Here maps allow you to download maps of whole countries if you want. Presto, cheap stand alone GPS, and you could use it as a phone if you want I guess.
