I get very distracted when I try to read a book. Either my mind starts to wander, I lose my train of thought, etc. It gets even worse if I start to think about a song. If that happens, its game over. :(

Are you able to focus long enough to read a book or is it admittedly difficult for you?

:hmm:

I usually read 1-3 books a day, providing they're not over a few hundred pages each. I love books...love everything about them. When I start to read I'm usually immersed immediately, almost like a state of meditation. Very little can catch my attention to bring me out from a book.

Reading takes practice. If you never read books or novels as a child, you won't be able to as an adult without practice.

Is your vocabulary lacking ? You may be getting distracted because you are bored, and you might be bored because you're running across many words that you do not understand.

It depends on the book. I get distracted on some of the drier ones, like On War by Carl Clausewitz. I am not saying it is a bad book, probably one of the most insightful books that I have ever read, but it was rather dry. I restarted it half-way through with the new translation (I was reading the old, original translation), which helped.

However, when reading some of Machiavelli's works, I can hardly put the book down. I read The Prince very quickly.

I dont really think its the complexity, but boredom does settle in. This happens especially when long introductions are made.

Oddly enough, the only books I enjoy reading are history books (because its always fun to find out something you didnt know that actually happened), or business books (investing, trading, etc).

I read quite well, but not frequently.
My dad probably read 5000 books in his life. Me so far? Less than a hundred I bet. Theres no way in hells I'll ever catch up to him.
Theres a cute nerd chick I've been trying to snuggle with. She does at least 1 book a week, usually 2.
I cant even get a 4-eyes. :(

This isn't an attempt to brag, it's just to illustrate why your statement is so incredulous to me. I'd read better than 10,000 volumes by the time I was 12. Start reading, you're missing out.

I read The Prince last year for AP Euro, and I found it to be one of the driest, most boring books I have ever read.

I only have trouble in that the letters are getting a bit fuzzy if I read a paperback at normal distance. I'm getting old... :(

I either need reading glasses, or a ebook reader where I can increase font size. I love books, and have read thousands of them over the years.

Reading for pleasure? no problem at all, unless the book sucks. I love reading books for pleasure.

Reading for school/work, like a text book? fuck no. i hate this shit especially if I don't have any interest in it.

I always have a book to read, even if it's one I've already read. In fact, I just ordered 6 or 7 new books the other day.

I find that I actually enjoy deciphering textbooks more than reading the average book. It's become a sort of game that I enjoy. It's sickening.

As for reading, I'm the type of reader who just pays attention to what's happening in the moment. The other day, a friend of mine was telling me about how inconsistent the storytelling was in Harry Potter 7. All I remember about Harry Potter is butter beer, and a fuckin sweet place to go to school :p I don't make any attempt in actually piecing together the plot of Harry Potter and asking myself whether it makes sense.

Reading + Me = Bad :(

I generally don't even read the books for my classes unless I absolutely have to.
This semester the only book I've opened to actually read so far was a mems and nano book I have, though might open another one for a test soon.

I just have to laugh at the harry potter comment. I know i read most of the books 3-7 or whatever int he ccourse of a 3 week period. I read them for fun, too.

I wish the poll had a depends option. I like to read books every now and then. It depends on the book or genre, and if I like the book itself will determine how quickly or slowly I finish it.

Case in point, I have the book "Noble House." I really liked. Complex story and all. I would recommend the book to others, but there were times in that book were i could only read a chapter a day because of the pacing and the part of the plot it was on.

I also started reading the hobbit. Couldn't even finish it because of the way it was written.

I have trouble finding time to read all of the books I want. I have no problem reading books though, it's one of my favourite things to do. Nothing beats a good book. :awe:

A little less, I started at age 4 and includes books read to me as well as National Geographic and the Compton's Encyclopedia. Dr Seuss rocked and when I was in elementary school, they still used basal readers. "See Jane run. Run, Jane run." :(

1-3 per day? Do you have a job?
