Do you have to have a Master?

I've never tried this out, but if I want to just rip a burner out of a system and it was the master and the cd-rom was the slave, do I have to reconfigure the cd-rom to master, or can it operate properly as the slave? Thx. Also since I never really updated the firmware on the generic 4x burner, I don't really need to do any software things, just rip it out , right? Thx ! :)

a cdrom alone on a ide chain will not work set as the slave...

firmware shouldn't matter except for software compatiblity.

I have cd-roms that are slave and all alone on their chain. (mostly because I'm to lazy to change the jumpers)
Works fine.

My moms computer has the cd-rom set as slave on the secondary channel with no master.

I would change it, but I'm too lazy.

You don't need a master, but sometimes components run better as a master.
