Most people that have never had a UPS or proper brownout protection (or for that matter surge supression) never even realize that's what made their computer stop working, and blame something else.

Yes. Power is commonly overlooked but is a major culprit when components or devices fail.

I disagree ;)

I sometimes have questions about chipsets, video cards and such, I post them in the correct forum and wait for responses. People who post technical questions in OT are generally inpatient attention-whores who (gasp!) might have to wait a day or two to get responses in the correct forum, amirite?.

but it's not really a technical question, hence OT.

"do you own a TV, and if so, what do you watch on it?" presumably wouldn't be the most appropriate topic for "Audio/Video & Home Theater," for example

But you asked about UPS's which clearly would fall under "general hardware" since a UPS cannot display a video image.

You are buying the wrong UPS then

Great, why even have sub-forums, everyone just post technical questions here and the place will be a humongous clusterfuck, we'll get people bumping threads about their latest GPU overclock so everyone can read about it!!.

As long as P&N is still self contained, it's cool.

I have one and everyone should, even a short blip can cause serious issues to your computer. I have a basic home grade one for my PC, it's an Ultra. Gives me about 25 minutes or so, since I put new batteries into it not that long ago.

For my network/server equipment I have a Trippe Lite inverter-charger connected to 2 large 100AH 12v deep cycle batteries. It gives me about 5 hours or so. I have 2 more batteries that I will be connecting to it once I build my battery rack and finish my basement. Occasionally we get extended maintenance power outages because the main road near here gets redone every 2 years or so and they sometimes replace the poles.

Eventually I want to setup a proper -48v dual conversion setup. Though I'm afraid that may cause more strain on the batteries from being charging all the time. Though I think if it's kept at float they will never boil over so I think I'd be fine.... I need to research this more. Finding rectifiers is hard too, none of the dealers show prices or offer an option to buy.
