Do you have a tech related forums site?

I'm doing okay with my main site, but I have a lack of contribution in the forums. Most of my registrations are from people looking to get some quick help, and then they're gone.

I'm going to try buying up some small but established forums and merging them into the site.

You may have new users for a while, but without a reason for them to stay they will leave.

There would be a reason.

The toughest part about starting a new forum, is that people do not like to register and stick around with a site that has the appearance there are only a few people that stuck around.

I wouldn't just be buying the members, I would be buying the posts and the domain name, which would redirect back to my site for awhile. Once I have merged the forums, it is up to me to give them a reason to stick around. Even if the original members didn't, the forums will appear to be active and encourage new members to sign up.

Buying members is not the way to go.

It is not an unusual business tactic.

Agreed and it can work.

I recently learned that the aaltonen.us forums were shutting down effective 7/31/2005, so I jumped into action and formed PowerEdgeForums.com. Best of all it cost me $0 (except for the domain, vBulletin license and web hosting).

How did you come across that info though, or did you happen to be a member there?

I posted a WTB at sitepoint, and have been looking at WTS but nothing remotely close is available. Maybe I should just do it the hard way. 😛

It was a total chance encounter I read tmiranda's post in this thread then saw the announcement. I contacted Oliver Aaltonen and the next day the new forums were up and running with all existing member accounts and posts successfully imported into vBulletin.

😕

My main link goes to Antisource.com, and to the right of that is a link directly to my forums on antisource.com.

Maybe I need to redo my sig... that mosh quote is taking up all my available space though. 😀

An SQL error has occured. Please see error.log for details.

Yea I have been having increasing problems with my current host. It is possible that my mysql driven CMS and phpBB is becoming too much for their server, but I am paying for 50gb of bandwidth and barely using 1gb per month. This should not be happening.

Bandwidth means jack when you're on a weak server that can't handle it 😉

It's all fixed now, seems that tables got corrupted. The server that I'm on isn't weak, but I'm thinking about paying extra to be put on a beefier server that hosts less accounts, just so my site's response time flies.
