I bought a Sensus Visco-Elastic memory foam mattress topper back almost 2 or 3 years ago, and yes, this is the most comfotable bed I ever been on, but there is a problem..

I know the purpose of memory foam is suppose relieves/reduce pressure of your body etc,
but now it is giving me lower back pain and my wife complains about her back pain as well.

Then some people starts to tell me that because my bed is too "soft" therefore causing
this back pain we are experiencing , is that true ?

And for all you memory foam owner,do you ever experience any back pain or any other problems assoicate with it ?

Oh and the too soft is BS in my opinion. I jumped on the firm bandwagon a while back and my back was much worse. I sleep on my side though if that makes a difference.

We have a fairly soft/firm-ish bed (it's REALLY soft to a *point*, basically). That's really nice, but every now and then I'll sleep on the guest bed or just nap on the office floor or something because I want something fairly hard to stretch out on.

I was actually having back pain before I got my foam top, it was cheap and when I put it on about a year ago my back pain disappeared, but now it is starting to surface again and I think it might be because the topper is losing its memory-like powers, you said that you have had yours for like 3 years, maybe it is time to invest in another one, or not...

DOH, it lost it's magical power ? it got like 10yrs warranty on them, and my foam still looking strong, just kinda yellowish.

I think you need to buy one thats 3inches or bigger (depends on ur size) , I had the cheap one long time ago, and it is not as good as the one thats heavier. :)

but ya, maybe elastic is wearing off... gotta look into that..

I've always believed a piece of foam is much better for your back than a mattress. It's all I use. Your back troubles may be a culmination of the two together. I find it hilarious how Serta sells their new "space age" foam mattress for as much as a regular sring built. Too much.

I've got one of those memory foam mattress toppers but it is no where near as good as a tempurpedic mattress. I will be getting another tempurpedic as soon as I can afford one. The toppers are a short-term fix at best.

You know what's cheaper?

Sleeping on a bed of cats.
I do so, and my back never hurts.

The Sensus memory form are well known for tempurpedic-like , they are not like the cheap stuff they sell at smartbargain or something,
maybe a memory foam mattress are better than the topper...

if you sleep on your stomach and your mattress is soft it WILL increase the liklihood of lower back pain. It kills the arch of your spine by making your lower back far too concave.

I can't imagine sleeping face down on a hard mattress doing any good either....

My whole matress is foam/memory foam.

Sometimes my back hurts but I think it's from sleeping on my stomach for most of the night. If I'm on my back all night, I'm fine. And it's not because of the matress, but rather the pillow.

Try a different pillow - first try a really flat one. See if that makes a difference. I use to have a viscofoam pillow on my old matress which helped my neck, but when we got the new foam matress, I couldn't use it anymore because my head was kept too high and it hurt my neck. You sink farther into a foam matress so you have to use a much shallower pillow.

I sometimes wake with a sore lower back but that's usually because my dog has jumped up during the night and taken over the whole darn thing.
