My wife and I were looking at a 54 inch, but the price is around $800 - $900.

Walmart is going to have around a 47 or 48 inch on sale for around $500 on black friday. I dont think the extra 7 inches is worth another $400.

That extra $400 could come in handy in December.

I would like to have a 54 inch, but my wife and I measured the furniture the TV sits on, and a 47 inch should fit nicely.

Sounds like you're just looking for the biggest, cheapest set you can buy. You don't care about quality? Most of the cheap sets blur, have crappy color quality and black levels. I don't really see the point of having a big ass TV if you're going to be looking at something that can't match or exceed the quality of those old tube screens.

With so many other devices to view my media the 54" goes largely unused, maybe 5-6 hr a week from football, TWD and Dexter. Tablet, laptop and 3 monitor desktop lets me watch what I want at my leisure.

My wife and I are looking to upgrade our living room TV during one of the black friday sales. We currently have a 36 inch, and are looking at upgrading to around a 47 inch.

The thing is, we mostly use our living room TV to entertain company. When we get a new DVD we will usually watch the new movie in the living room, but that is about it.

The treadmill is in the living room, and I watch TV during my workouts.

That is about the majority of our TV watching. The rest of the time I am on my computer playing a game on steam - left 4 dead 2, borderlands,,,,. My wife plays games on facebook.

I do not watch any sports at all, no baseball, no football,,, nothing.

From comments posted here in the past, a lot of members have large TVs. But how often do you use the TV? Do you spend a lot of time watching the TV, or is the majority of your time spent somewhere else?

'nuff said, Tex.

Hulu, no TV. I have one hooked up but that's only for when guests come over.

I'm amazed at how much I can get done w/out watching crappy commercials half the night.

I took the plunge last year and went 100" PJ. It's the only TV in the house now. We spend probably <15h a week watching TV. It's all about your lifestyle.

How much time do you spend in that room now? I would probably guess you'll spend the exact same amount of time with a larger TV set in the room. If it was me, though, I'd probably want to make sure I have a good pair of wireless headphones that I could wear on the treadmill before I got a bigger TV.

Having said though, Best Buy will have a crappy 42" for $199.

How much did you pay for it? If you got it at a significant discount, what was it selling for normally?
The Westy was around $900 with a local in-store promotion (this was about 4 years ago, mind you). The Samsung was $2k-ish online a couple years ago. I had a choice between a 55" Samsung and a 52" Samsung for the same price, and I went with the smaller set because the picture quality was said to be better. I have not regretted that decision for a single second.

As for the question of whether I would buy the Samsung or the Westinghouse today? My budget is much more at the level of the Westinghouse these days, but knowing what I know about the picture quality issues, I'd be tempted to save money and spend it on a reputable brand. The Westinghouse was fine having never seen what a good TV can do, but I look at it now (I gave it to my brother's family, so I'll occasionally watch it over there), and it just flat-out sucks. There's no way I'd buy a bargain-bin TV to be my primary set.

I have a 50" Plasma in my living room, and a 40" LCD in the bedroom. Both have Blu-Ray players, but the 50" also has a 5.1 surround sound system. Both get used almost daily.

I have a 55" Sony LCD current year model in the living room with 2 mid-size speakers on stands, hooked up to a preamp and power amp. Also the Verizon FiOS DVR and PS3. I use it daily when I get home at 10PM or so.

No TV in my room.

Sony 55" in the living room - its our main TV that gets used on the daily.

If you have not adopted HD content from Satellite or Cable - you will not experience the glory that is a large TV. And yes, sports & nature shows look amazing in HD.

I regretted only buying a 50" about a month after I did. I'd love a 55" or maybe even a 60", but it'll probably be awhile.

I regret not going with the 73" TV over the 65" that I did buy. I kind of prefer a more immerse feel, but I think that's nearly impossible given the very rectangular nature of my living room (given I watch it longways).

Although, I don't really use my TV that much. I have the 65" downstairs and a 46" upstairs, but I find that I usually prefer to multi-task a lot. I try to watch my movies downstairs though, since the home theater setup is far better than the piddly Logitech speakers on my computer.

My never had a TV when I was a kid, didn't get one until senior of college, and that was a POS Vizio 26". When I graduated (last may) I bought a 50" Kuro 101-FD. Use it daily since it's hooked up to my PS3, 360, and computer (HTPC case) all running through a Denon receiver and hooked up to Polk Monitor 70s.

It's more than enough TV for me.
