Do you have a file server at home?

I just recently set up my fileserver at home. I'd never so much as touched a Linux box before in my life, but my sister had this old PIII 800MHz 128MB H.P. Pavilion lying around collecting dust, so I installed Xubuntu on it. I got Samba up and running so I could access my share from my Windows machines, then I installed a LAMP stack and Torrentflux. Now it's a fileserver and a torrent client.

Unfortunately I still need to acquire some real storage space for it (only running on a 20 or 25 GB HDD right now). I need to find a SATA PCI card that will work under Xubuntu, and then I plan to get a couple of 500-750GB drives to stick in there.
 
My "file" server is my media center... it sits behind my tv and has all my music and all the backups from my laptop on it... Windows MCE 2005
 
Yes, kubuntu here in an old P4 with roughly 1 TB across 5 second hand drives.
I want to replace it with a decent RAID 5 NAS box but I can't justify the price since I use it for backup / storage only.

I used to have it on 24/7 but I only turn it on when I need to backup or store/retrieve files which surprisingly is only like once every two weeks.
 
my windows 1800 MP 512mb but i got a 60gb for programs and a full 40gb for music i really need a 250gb for this machine.. or if i was to get a fast small hd put my main rig 160gb in it
 
For those that do, do you have everything on one hard drive hoping it does die or do you have some sort of RAID system setup? I've thought about doing a file server but it's just my wife and I and the only files that we share are pictures so it doesn't really matter. We do have My Docs shared though so we can get at each other's stuff if we need it anyway.
 
windows (because of my PVR software), dual p3 866, encoder, ssl-vpn endpoint, approaching 2TB of storage....

if it weren't for the PVR, it would be running linux in a heartbeat.
 
yep, AXP 3000+@2.33Ghz, GA-7N400PRO, 1GB DDR333, Gigabyte 6800 128mb, 2x WD1200JB 240gb Raid 0.

It a pretty sweet machine that serves my Network well.

I used to run a RAID 5, but now I'm going back to one large hard disk with an external hard disk for backup.

That's pretty much my deal too. Running XP on a 1.9Ghz P4 and it makes a fine server and a backup rig in case my main rig is busy.

All my important stuff is backed up to tape and to an additional external HD.

Everything else is just setup as individual drives. I never span volumes or anything..not THAT stupid😛
 
I basically do....a file server to share between less than 5 clients is overkill and causes security concerns. (More to patch, etc) So I have a huge external firewire hard drive that is shared through my windows box to my network. Any other system on this hard-wired subnet can get to it. I have it disabled for the wireless. 😉
 
File server running samba in FreeBSD.

As for those who are running one in Windows....come on...challenge yourself. Waaay too damn easy to do it in Windows.
