Do you have a <edit>WIRELESS></edit> router with a print server?

I bought the US Robotics 8022 Wireless Router with Print Server and analog modem port.

One of the problems I am having with it is trying to get the printer to work through the router. I have spoken with US Robotics customer support at least 12 times. What it boils down to is that any printer that can't disable it's bidirectional support is not compatible with this router.

Do you have a router with a print server that is connected to a printer and it works?

If so, please tell me which router/printer combo you are are using.

Thanks.....

Mine ain't wireless, but it's the SMC7004BR. It's also got a Com port, which is pretty damn handy. Tech support is fantastic, too.

What kind of printer is it? If it's a network printer, you should be able to open up the printing port and have no issues going through a router. For HP printers that's port 9100.

There is a new standard as well call IPP. Internet Printing Protocol. This is routable and is coming as an option on all new networkable printers. If your printer isn't networked, you might want to see if you can locate a print server program that you could install on one of your computers to enable ipp support for your printer and queue up print jobs for you. I deal with Netware 6 a lot and it has ipp as a new option with the iPrint package (part of NDPS)....I'm sure there are some independent shareware or freeware programs that will be popping up soon that can do the same thing for a lot cheaper. That's where ip printing is going in the very near future.

I have an HP LaserJet 4L.

It is not a network printer.

My goal is to be able to send print jobs directy to my printer via the router (I don't want to use my other PC as a print server).

Any suggestions?

I hope I don't have to buy a new printer to get this to work.

I have a DLINK 713P that has a built in printer server and parallel port. I'm not sure if it would work with your HP, but it probably would.

You need a printer that has a NON-host-based driver.

Unfortunately, many of HP's personal laser printers and nearly all of their inkjet printers use host-based drivers.
The L and P series printers (4L/P, 5L/P, 6L/P) are notorious for their host-based drivers.

The current 1000 series LJs also use host-based drivers.

Good luck!

Tallgeese: is there anyway to determine which printers don't have host-based drivers?

Are Epsons any better?

U.S. Robotics says the problem is that the printer needs to be able to function in unidirectional mode--I have disabled bidirectional mode and I still can't get the printer to work through the router.

Thank you.

I have the SMC7004 as well, I run an epson 770 off of it though. Only downside is the bi-directional doesnt report back ink levels.

I am running an SMC Barricade SMC7004BR. I am using the parallel port on the router connected to an Okidata OL 810e laser printer and it works fine from all 4 PC on my LAN. SMC's tech support is great and the web site is very helpful. Initially had grief when I built my new PC (XP Home) connecting to the print server, but a quick visit to the SMC site and install the device as an Standard IP Printer worked great.
