Do you have a camcorder? Do you use it?

We're expecting in April, and have been looking at camcorders.

Thinking the Cannon HF-100 is the best bang for the buck and has everything we could possibly want. Of course, case + memory + extra battery + etc (throw in a 1tb drive for the files) makes this an expensive purchase ...

While we want to do it, we're questioning how often we'll actually use it ...

So ... do you have one? Do you use it?

I paid about $700 for a first gen hard drive based camcorder about 6 years ago. I used it maybe 5 times in those 6 years. When I bought it I thought it would be awesome and I would get to record everything. But the reality of it is that even though it is small, if it doesn't fit in my pants pocket I don't want to carry around. I would have been better off getting a high end point and shoot camera with video and voice capabilities.

bought a mini-dv years ago right before we had our first kid. I think we have used about 20-30 tapes. I'll probably get a compact HD camera when the kids get into sports etc.

Have a mini-dv, used around 8 tapes so far. Not much recently. I keep the Lion batteries (got 2) in the refrigerator. I charge/discharge them to about 40% capacity and into the fridge. They are supposed to keep better that way.

Since you are having kids, I think you'll be very very glad you got this stuff. Get a DSLR too.

My brother has kids and their family's obsession with taking pictures and videos is probably a big part of why they are such a close knit family.

I remember my dad taking lots of video and pictures ... can't say I've watched one recently ... he was the camera / camcorder toting freak. Bags and accessories, etc. Now they're so small ...

I think we'll probably do it ... but she wants one of the $299 JVC colored guys ... I'd rather do it up and get something really nice.

just use a digicam

I agree. They're not quite as good as a real video camera (and not HD), but they're close enough that the convenience and versatility makes a P&S digicam a great replacement for a video camera.

Had one for a long time. Used it a lot for our first child. Rarely since. Still pics are more common now, but you really get over the needing to take a lot of video/pics after the first kid.

Depends. My sister-in-law's a freak for that stuff and as far as I can tell she's never lost any of her enthusiasm. Their walls are covered with photos. I stopped to look when I visited their house over Thanksgiving and it was amazing to see the history of their families going back 60+ years. I'm sure they have a ton of stuff I've never seen and will never see. Their wedding photos were amazing and I'm sure they have video from that too that's amazing.
