someone posted an article this weekend about mattress buying, in which the author said box springs were pointless... I've never actually slept without one, but I'm in the midst of shopping for a new mattress and it has me thinking about going sans-box spring

(my bed is adjustable, so I could get the same height without a box spring as I have with one, so that's not a huge issue)

We do not, we have slats on our bedframe and then a very nice King Koil mattress on top.

that is crazy talk, the only people that don't have a box spring are college students that live in dorms or that throw a mattress on the floor of their apartment

No, the nicer/newer bedframes have a support system built in so you do not have to use a boxspring.

I didn't have one during a year in college but do now. I didn't really notice a difference.

Ive got one..

cant say ive ever even slept on a bed without them. I have slept on spring, air, and water beds, and I actually prefer a good quality, plush spring mattress to an air mattress. I like to have a little bounce when I move around.

Yes. But it's not under my matress, because it wouldn't fit up the stairs. So we have a crappy bed from Ikea with slats while our nice bed is out in the shed waiting for us to move to a different house.

lol that sucks. My parents rented a crane to move the piano, bed, and hottub up to the upper balcony/bedroom.

Unfortunately we don't have any windows that would be large enough to fit a bed in, let alone a piano. We considered a few options, including damaging the ceiling above the stairs to get it past (it's SO close to being able to fit) and buying a two piece boxspring, but in the end we decided we didn't really care since we're going to be moving in a year or so anyway.

It's an old house (built in the 30s), lots of quirks. No closets worth speaking of.

I have a boxspring. Two of them, in fact. my king bed came with two half-sized boxsprings, which is really nice as it makes it easier to move that bed around.

We use a box spring - I like the bed a little higher, and it gives us an extra 8" of height or so.

They didn't seem to be too common in Germany, most people seemed to have slats. For some reason I don't see them having a ton of back problems or having 80% of their people with walking sticks because their posture and back is so horrible. Personally, I think they are a crock of crap.

Why do you need support for something that already provides support? If you have 2, 5, 10 extra box springs will that make it better?

The people will say that it allows the matress springs to compress and transfer stress to the box spring, but why do you even need that? Aren't they high enough gauge or tall enough, or counted enough to do the job?

How much "give" will transfer?

We just bought a $1k set, with a boxspring, and I think it was a waste of money.

I've never heard of them providing support, but rather that the mattress lasts longer with one.

I have one. The cat scratched off the cover of it and now he sleeps inside of it. Friggin' cat.

Box springs suck. Platform beds are much more comfortable and better for your back.

(1) Yes ... I have box spring (came as a set with my memory-foam mattress)

(2) No ... they are not required for a good nights sleep, however many mattress makers will void your warranty if you don't use one so be sure to read the fine print.

I have the cheap metal roller frame, then a box, then a matress.
(Spinal Comfort Capri, the firmest I could find.)

My comforter and pillow cases are looking kind of worn, I think I need a new Bed-In-A-Bag.
