Will English die in this country? hell no.
Will Spanish grow in use? absolutely.
Ease of communication is essential for a stable, efficient society.

If half the country speaks a different language than the other half, the tendency will be towards a sort of natural segregation.

It's just a damn language, it's a way of converting your thoughts to a form that can be sent to other people. Yes, let's develop an emotional attachment to it!
Brb, going to go snorgle a C++ book.

People and the silly things they get attached to.....geez.

I mentioned in another thread, which I can't find now, I will attend a math class and insist that 89g7ò?Ç43 = daf090 + !?TÉ+8, and if I'm graded poorly for writing "nonsense" on assignments, I'll just complain that they don't speak the right mathematical language, and insist that they accommodate me properly. Who's to say I'm in the wrong? Is it because I'm the only person using the language, thus making me a minority? Stop discriminating against minorities!

The Spanish speakers are seriously at the point where they think they are entitled to shit in this country, and its extremely fucking irritating.

If we ever do grow balls and pass a bill to declare an official language, it will probably be Spanglish.

I swear, I could listen to her all day. French is a beautiful language...especially when she speaks it. :D

Aaahh no, 89g7ò?Ç43 = daf090 + ?Ä?Tɯ?8. You didn't correctly separate the variables when factorizing ?.

That is at least somewhat understandable.

I had someone call in the other day. Chinese fella, absolutely indecipherable. 10 minutes later and not a clue what he wanted, he asked for my supervisor (which I was able to grasp). Supervisor then spent another couple of minutes trying to figure out what the heck he was saying. Then he asked for her manager. Manager answers the call, by that time the wife is on the line who speaks little English but just enough for us to comprehend what the problem is. And then, she wastes a couple of minutes blasting us for not having a Mandarin support line (although we do offer callback in 20-something languages within 24 hours which is what both me and my supervisor tried to offer the original caller. Sure, we are a large company but WTH would we have a dedicated 24/7 team for Mandarin?). And then wanted to file a complaint about me and my supervisor for 'not understanding her husband'.

Her claim was we were pretending to not understand him to mock/insult him. Yeah, whatever lady.

Bugs the crap outta me in grad school. I wouldn't consider it an issue if they actually knew English well but just spoke another language with friends. However, some of those students can't write a basic sentence without severe grammatical errors. That's a huge problem in my opinion. You read papers that are barely understandable, or you have to deal with TAs that can't write notes that make any sense simply because they refuse to use English regularly (which would naturally improve their writing and speaking abilities).

At one of my old jobs customers would get mad if you didn't speak Spanish even if they spoke English. I knew Spanish and I'd ask them why they don't learn English when they've been here for years.

I am a native English speaker who moved to europe 2 years ago. I now live in Italy - a country that is beginning to learn the troubles and difficulties associated with uncontrolled and illegal immigration. When I moved here i began to learn to speak in Italian. While I am by no means fluent, I CAN communicate and do not expect others to simply speak with me in english.

IMO, English IS/SHOULD be the "official" language of the United States and anyone wanting to live and work in the USA should learn to speak read and write in english. It is time the govt stopped bending over backwards.

I have to deal with this everyday!! GRR. hehe, then again, we have scientists and hawt grad students from many different countries come aboard; depending on which country we're docked at :p.

I'm the oddman out when I'm in foreign countries. I only have enough time to grab a few words here and there :(. I once met this one girl, and we talked to each other.. except, I had no idea wtf she was saying. She was speaking in chinese, and I in english. I was shitfaced drunk, and kept blabbering on. Now thinking about it, maybe she was a prostitute :Q :( :(.

The citizens have a tiny little solid argument that they should be entitled to shit.

I give no such allowance to any immigrants, ESPECIALLY illegals. And most of the Spanish speakers here today are illegals.

I am french canadian fully bilingual. When out with a group of people I will use french whenever possible even if there are English only people in the group. Why? Because it's easier for me and the other person to communicate using our native language. Some people get offended and think we are rude, Sorry but if you don't like it, learn the language.

Bonne journée.

So wait...I guess you travel to new places in this country and ask, "Excuse me, what language do you people speak here?" After all, you wouldn't want to travel to places like New York, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Boise, Topeka, Cleveland, Portland, Austin, Des Moines, Charleston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Tuscon, Philadelphia, Memphis, St. Louis, Bismarck, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Sarasota, San Diego, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Miami, Buffalo, Denver, Kansas City, Oakland, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, or Boston, and just assume that the people there speak English! That would be preposterous and ignorant!

I agree that immigrants must learn to speak English. No excuse to be domiciled in a country and not attempt to speak the language.

That being said, I think native English speakers are equally bad offenders at this. I'm in Korea at the moment, and I've met expats who have been living in Korea for 5-10 years and don't make an effort to learn Korean.

Why would I go to any of those places and expect them to speak anything besides English?

"Excuse me sir, I'm from Virginia, USA. What language do you speak here in Tulsa?"

If I ever visited Korea I would make every effort to learn the language first. At least one semester worth for a vacation and several years of study if I were to take a job there.

(MIL is the only one that speaks no English; FIL speaks and understands English but doesn't like to speak it.)

If you feel less than fully included, then why don't you learn the language? That's what I did.
