I literally hate my job so much that when I don't have to work, it ruins my days off because I only think about how many more hours until I have to work again. No joke.

I'm starting a business so I hope not to be doing this a year from now.

I want to wake up everyday and do whatever I want. Have no schedule and enough money to buy anything I want. And soon. Not when I'm 60. Drive the cars I want. Live in the neighborhood I want. Go anywhere in the world on a whim. Just leave for some exotic place at the last minute and not even tell anyone, just go and relax and not be rushed while on vacation trying to "see all the sights," because I know I can come back anytime I want as much as I want.

I had the exact same epiphany.

For the last year or two, I just dreaded being at work and had no inclination to do anything. Work was so mentally and physically exhausting that weekends were only good for resting up. It got so bad in the last few months that I started drinking heavily, finished a 750 mL bottle of rum in 3 weeks -- not much but a smaller bottle used to last me months.

Generally no, I actually like my job, it's really laid back, pays well, and has great hours. I get lot of time off because it's shift work. The more 12's I work the more time off I get, typically. I've had stretches of like 7 days where I'm off.

Fuck that...if I work 12 hour days...I want 8 hours of regular pay and 4 hours of double time pay for all days M-F, 8 hours of time and a half and 4 hours of double time for Saturday...and all 12 hours of double time for Sunday.

Actually the way it works for us is it's 160h 4-week periods so it's equivalent to working 8*5 except instead of having to go to work every single day you work more hours per day but get more time off. I prefer this to 8*5 tbh.

We do get Sunday premium and night shift premium too. I actually prefer working nights since I don't have to get up early and they go by fast.

Just got home from about 16 hours at work and loved almost every minute of it. Now the dreaded weekend, hopefully I can just sleep through the whole thing.

Damn. seems most of you are just a bunch of miserable bastards. I enjoy my job and don't mind going to work at all.

I really enjoyed the ones that want to do anything and everything for as long as I want and not have to work for it.

How precious. Their parents must have told them that they are special.

Hope things get better for you....before your liver gives out.

Otherwise it might be wise to look around if you can, no job is worth that much aggravation. My last one was 10x worse than the one I have now (its mild by comparison).

I grew up in a proletariat environment and was told I should get a job at a big company and work until I'm gray. I was never told I was special, I was told I had to stand in line like everyone else.

You can be resigned to your fate of a lifetime of cubicle slavery but some people in this world are living awesome lives. I want to be one of those people. I've awoken to the mental slavery mindset this society puts on people, constantly asking children "what they want to be" when they grow up. Expecting them to pick out from a list what lame ass job they want to sacrifice their life doing. I want to not have to put up with peoples crap and do and buy whatever I want.

If you hate going to work, it's time to change your work.

I wish I didn't have to work, but I can't complain for what I do.

Some days it's a long haul like on Election day I was at a Supervisor of Elections office from 6am to 9pm to just babysit the network. Pretty much facebook, internet and some studying all day.

A couple days ago I was upgrading a popular radio station (actually four popular stations in one building)...got to meet some DJ's and it's was an easy job, just a long day (1pm to about 2am).

The next week I will be working at one of the most exclusive hotels in the country right on the ocean. Yeah it's still work, but the environment is nice.

If you like your job, it's not bad.

I had about 75% of my hours for the week done in two days...being that I only need about 70% utilization my week was done.

Oh, I finally did something and quit. Gave two weeks notice. I'm going into teaching now. Job market sucks, but hey, it's what I genuinely want to do, I was a great student from k-12 to grad school, so I may as well give it a shot. Worst case, I do a PhD and get "forced" to teach freshman.

You forgot the part about blind obedience to authority figures, not asking questions, seeking the approval of your peers who only want to stab you in the back, and following the herd just because.

Actually enjoy it quite a bit. Work remotely in the field so can pretty much set my own hours as long as I'm getting my 40+ a week in and getting my work done, supervisor doesn't really micromanage and care when you work. Easy to just take an hour or whatever here or there if I have an appointment, need to run some errands, etc. and make it up elsewhere. Just need to be by phone between 8-5 available to respond in case something breaks (except on-call which is 24x7 obviously, but I don't even mind that much, kind of a pain but can be good money). Company truck and gas card so end up putting hardly any miles on my personal vehicle, mostly just running around town to pick up groceries/stuff like that and traveling to visit family. Work alone 95% of the time which is fine by me since I've never been a big people person anyway. Job isn't super technical, but technical enough that it can be fairly interesting and challenging. Fast-paced and rapidly changing industry so constantly learning and getting to work with new wireless technologies.

Not that it doesn't have it's BS, it's still work, but what job doesn't I guess. Don't have a ton of time in the workforce and work experience to compare it to, but sounds like the BS is pretty minimal compared to some other jobs out there, so feel like I have it pretty good and am fairly fortunate.

[Chip Industry - High Vacuum Sem Tools] - The only thing I hate about work is my schedule - 4 days a week 10 hours per day that starts at 6am and mostly ends at 5pm. The job in itself is relatively easy, but there are times where it frustrates the hell out of me [late lunches, annoying coworkers, etc]. What I do like about my job is it's 100% pager based and I'm not required to go into the office unless it's a mandatory meeting.

Alas - I know I'd be much happier owning my own computer upgrade/repair shop as that's what I love doing. But...like most people - I "settled" into my current job which I'm amazingly good at and pays well enough for me not to go look for work elsewhere.

Recently yes. We are so stupidly understaffed and I'm seeing my responsibilities grow, customer issues escalating and no one stepping up. I'm almost ready to get out, going to ride it out until after the holidays and then start applying elsewhere.

I don't work in a cubicle.

What is the plan for making this happen? Winning the lottery? LOL!

Heck yeah, 5 day work weeks are for suckers!

I work 3 or 4 12.5 hour shifts... 3 on, 3 off, 4 on, 4 off. I hope I never have to work a "regular" schedule ever again.

Meh, depends heavily on what projects I am on.
Same here.
For the past year or so the Engineering department would be more accurately called the "Help Desk Department." We have to redirect IT-related questions to IT. We get them because some people know that engineering's better at figuring that stuff out, oddly enough, and because our office is physically closer than IT's.
Sales team questions, customer support questions, inventory management, purchasing coordination, questions from the Shop floor, meetings with vendors, questions from outside contract manufacturers.....
Then for maybe 0-60 minutes a day, the engineering department can do engineering work. Things don't always come off of our project list because they're done. They come off because management has decided that we can live without them.

But hey, at least they're saving boatloads of money on payroll. :\

Bleh.
I used to like being at work - interesting projects, and I could focus on something for more than 5-10 minutes without interruption (not an exaggeration), and projects were ended because they were finished.

Allegedly it'll improve over the next year due to some recent personnel adjustments.
It's tough to just up and leave though:
- I like the other person in the department, and we work together quite well.
- Department manager is reasonable to work with.
- I got to spec out my own PC and I'm an admin-level user on it, meaning I can use the damn thing without constantly smacking into the walls of user-level security. A PC with user-level permissions is like chopping off one of a surgeon's hands and gluing a mitten over the other one, and then replacing the available tools with a Fisher Price Medical Kit. Using a crippled computer gets me a little bit crazy.

- The try-before-you-buy method of shopping around for jobs isn't terribly easy.

I think its funny when people bitch about going to work. Everyone has certain aspects of their jobs they don't care for. I f'ing HATE doing expense reports.

"You and you alone are responsible for the direction and quality of your life" - Robert Pickard.

Be grateful for the job you have (I'm certain someone else would) until you can get a better one. Yeesh.

With your kind of attitude, you're never going to get out of your situation. Start a business that can become profitable fast, that's how you move out of poverty (a job).

I like my job (physical design / CAD flow dev). Management and some people not so much, but they don't usually end up getting in my way.

I feel very fortunate to have a job as good as mine at a young age (25), but still occasionally find myself wanting to work for myself and create some new technology or product that's completely mine or belongs to me + a group of friends.

I work at a government r&d type of company and get to work on a variety of cool things, usually don't have to deal with people and just work on algorithms or code which I appreciate, don't feel like I'm getting dumber post-graduating because I still work on technical things and still have to open my old textbooks and new textbooks that work buys me, etc. They're sending me to get my MSEE and I work from home twice a week in the mornings and then go attend classes in Boston at the same university I went to undergrad at.

Basically I'll be here for another ~2.2ish years at the very least -- the time it'll take to finish school and then "serve my time" which is 1 year after my last tuition reimbursement or I have to pay them back. I certainly wouldn't mind staying longer, but like I said .. will probably want to try something else while I'm young or I'll just stay here forever.
