Do you guys think Plextor DVDRW drives are worth the extra money?

I've always been tempted to buy one but they always cost so much and with solid performers in the $30 range, do you guys think Plextor's are worth the money?

I used to get plextors any time I needed an optical drive. Now, I just get Lite-On... YYMV.

And btw, those who tell you they are worth the extra $$$ won't have evidence to back it up, since there is none.

Back years ago, they may have been the best, but those days are long gone.

I only buy Plextor but their quality control has gone down since they started making DVDRW drives.

Back when they were making SCSI optical drives. Now, I just buy NEC optical drives.

I will only use Plextor and Lite-On brands of burners. In my main rig I have 2 DVD-burners, one of each brand.

And as far as evidence of Plextor's superiority goes, I have an old Plextor 8x4x32 CD burner that still works great in a family member's computer... that sucker is several years old and has yet to make a coaster. I've gone through dozens of other brand drives and Plextor always last.

The Plextor 32X SCSI CD readers were the best and worth the money but that was 10 years ago.

They should partner with Monster Cable for the IDE cable now.

Correction...the 40TSi was the best. I've got one in my secondary machine paired with my Plextor 16/4/32. I also have a Plextor DVD burner in my MCE machine that's still going strong as well.

I've had some burned discs from friends that couldn't be read by other optical drives, but my Plextors did fine. And I also found that cheap media worked well with them, but produced coasters on other drives. I've seen a lot of drives give up the ghost.

Yes they are, but only if you use them a lot. In my experience, Plextors last longer, make less coasters and are better at reading damaged discs.

If you only use the drive occasionally, or only use quality media, get a NEC or something similar.

I have always had an excellent experience with plextor drives over the years, however they are a nice to have sort of thing these days rather than actually being worth the extra.

If you are on a tight budget I wouldn't recommend one, however if you can afford the extra you won't regret it, however like others have said other brands like Liteon and NEC produce excellent drives as well these days.

I still have my 12x Ricoh drive in my computer. It's been a great one too. I still use it for ripping CDs.

It's sad how they won't reduce their prices to match where the industry has gone. They used to be a little more expensive for a much better product. Now they're 3-4x price for a marginally better (?) product.

If you want/need an SATA drive, you have to pony up a Benny for the Plextor. Samsung makes some, but I can't find them in the States.

Or just use an adapter. I've read on these forums that the Plextor just has the adapter built in.

I have a Plextor that has one feature I really like, that I haven't seen on other drives, the burn light is a different color (red) than the power light. Any other drives have this realatively simple but informative feature?

No.......I use Lite-On,LG,Freecom etc.. never had any real problems in burning,I did have an external PSU die on one of the external Lite-On models but the burner itself was fine.

No, i don't get any coasters anymore since i switched to decent media. It makes far more difference than the drive itself imo.
