Do you guys stop what you're doing when another country's anthem is playing?

As an example, when I'm watching sports on TV, I try to be very respectful while anthems are being played.

I am from Canada and one thing I've noticed is that some of my friends are always talking when the American anthem is being played and only show respect while the Canadian anthem is being played. I find it very annoying and rude.

When I hear the American anthem I show just as much respect (and honestly sing along sometimes).

What do you people do when you hear another country's anthem?

As long as it isn't about drowning puppies or something of the like, I tend to respect others. No skin off my back to join them for a moment.

How many countries are there in the world? Am I expected to learn the anthems of all of them?

I don't really have much in the way of national pride/nationalism. Yeah a government is a nice thing, but it's just a matter of logistics, a way of organizing disorderly people. I don't stand in silent respect whenever I hear Intel's signature sound. They are also a large entity which does a lot of productive stuff as well, why not show them respect?

Heck, some would say your silence isn't sufficiently respectful - you should stand at attention, hand on your heart, etc etc.

applies to any anthem
Yes, pretty much this.

Back when those rules about showing respect for an anthem being played were written, you'd only hear a good rendition of such an anthem if a real band was right there going to the trouble of playing it.

Now your cellphone's ringtone can play a national anthem. And what then? Answer the phone, or stand in silence and let it play through? 😛

I shout insults and slurs relating to the nationality of the anthem being played (except the American anthem).

Depends where I'm at. If it's TV I probably will continue eating chips or w/e. If it's live at a stadium or something, I'll stand like everyone else and be respectful. When I went to nascar they played the US anthem so we stood up and all even being Canadian. One thing I must admit, Americans are WAY more patriotic then we are. Almost every 2nd house had a US flag in the yard, and it was amazing how they have the jets passing by during the anthem. (guess the good year blimp is just too slow 😛 or is that for baseball?)

I'm not a fan of mindless symbolism. I give other countries' anthems the same respect as my own. If it's for a sports game, then that means very little. If it's something more meaningful like a funeral, an important anniversary or some sort of military remembrance then I'll stay silent and bow my head.

This isn't patriotism, it's mindless symbolism like I mentioned in my post above. Patriotism involves actually doing something, not unthinkingly waving a flag.

No. I turn the channel if our nation's anthem is playing. I don't want to sit through that annoying crap. Of course, I watch actual television programs and not sports. So I almost never have to deal with it unless some news program shows someone singing it.

sez the kiwi...I suppose if I were a New Zealander, I'd dismiss anyone elses patriotism too...

I AM patriotic. I fly my American flag every day, I stand, hat off, hand over my heart at any live playing of The Star-Spangled Banner, served 4 years in the US Marine Corps, and I'm vocal as hell when my government does things I disagree with.

As for other nation's anthems...(not that it's likely to happen, but...) IF I were at a public event such as a sporting event, and another nation's anthem were playing, I'd probably stand and show respect. There may be a few nations that I wouldn't show respect for, but they're a minority.

The bolded above is why I'd agree that you are patriotic, which is kind of what I was getting at. I'm not really sure what your first sentence means, I certainly don't dismiss other people's patriotism. I dismiss false patriotism, I dismiss symbolism and I dismiss patriotism for patriotism's sake (ie, nationalism).

I've been told that I'm a horribly nationalistic son-of-a-bitch...and I agree. I am both nationalistic AND a Nativist...😀

I believe that I am a citizen of the greatest country in the world...and am proud of it.
