I've never worn one of those Grounding straps. ANd I've never had a problem. I also use magnetic screwdrivers and people seem to be worried about that too.

Where can one find these mats to work on? I'm about to start saving to purchase the most expensive computer I've ever made and I don't want to deal with static shock causing failure. For an extra bit of sense of security I'll gladly lay down $25.

Look, I have set up maybe a hundred of these things in a factory envirnoment, right up to conducting and functional test certification of the work station.

Now - if you're not working at the solder - desolder, install mictrochips, replace integrated circuit component level
you don't really need to work to that extreme of a safety level, all you have to do is touch the metal case - anywhere,
before you lift up, open, or install any circuit cards or memory sticks.

But if you insist, These are available at a decent price

The 18 X 26 and the 24 X 26 are decent sizes.
We always used 24 X 48's

Well I'll take your word on it and keep my $25 + shipping. Thanks. I've never worried about it but when you lay down $1500 on something it's hard not to.

Just make your own. Strip about a foot of insulation from a wire, wrap it around your wrist, and attach the other end to your case. Why bother buying some stupid strap?

You most likely touch the metal case before any component.

Agreed. I've never used any type of grounding device in my 10 years of building computers, and have never had a problem *knocks on wood*

same and I've yet to have any problems.

Never used one, and as far as I know never did any damage. Hell I switched video cards while a pc was still running. Of course I had to reboot after I had it in, go figure.

NEVER use a straight piece of wire. Always use a resistor in line. If you were to accidentally contact something at mains potential the chance of this mistake being fatal is very likely.

Of course if you're fascinated with death, I hear this is quite painless and clean unlike a 12 ga in the mouth.

the grounding bracelet things have resistors?

Same here, and I'm only 14.

So, in short, if I can do it, the rest of you panzies should be able to do it too:D

yes I basically said to myself: SELF! you're grounded! now go to your room. So to my room I went, grounded as I were and proceeded to work on my computer, cause what else is there to do when you're grounded but work on your computer.

please don't answer that. it was a rhetorical question. which means I babble rhetoric. if only i were paid like a filthy politicial for doing so.

For everyone who touches the case, remember that it doesn't do anything unless the computer is plugged in.

Doesn't it equalize your charge with the PC's? That should do it right?

More importantly, roll your parts around the carpet, rub them back and forth until you feel intimate pleasure (metal touching the carpet turns you on, you know it).

No seriously. I worked on my last build for a friend a few weeks ago on the carpet ungrounded. Nothing happened...

Besides, if anything goes wrong with your computer, you can blame it on static and RMA it :p
