I only use nicknames when it's funny. After a certain episode of Futurama I started calling somebody at work "Wiggles"

It hasn't quite spread yet but it's started to take hold. It's funny because he doesn't like it

I once changed someone's name in high school... I was a junior and I accidentally referred to a freshman I was on stage crew with by the wrong name. I refused to admit my mistake and it stuck -- for the rest of his high school career, Ryan was called Andy.

outside of that, no. I generally call people by whatever name they prefer to be called (unless they're a real dick about it... I used to work with a Johnathan who would hyperventilate anytime someone called him John.)
