P95 is good.

It cant test 3D.

i usually run 2 instances of prime95 when im testing stability, the highest rock solid oc ive gotten when testing with P95 was 2.6@3.03, not too shabby, but not as lucky as a lot of people either. but i aint complaining, at least im at 3.0ghz, and not 2.6.

I run it but I don't run it for marathon sessions like others. If it runs fine for 30 minutes then i'm fine with that. Then I test the games and if they all run without crapping out, i leave it where it is.

prime95 aint enough.
there are many programs that can crash a p95 stable system.

p95 is a start, thats about it.

Like THUGSROOK said, Prime95 isn't enough.

But it's definately a test I run right away. If it fails Prime95, even after a few hours, I kick it down a notch, voltage bump or whatever.

Same here. I use P95 Torture Test to check the stability of any overclock/after making voltage changes, etc.

I let it run overnight...8 hours minimum. If it doesn't fail after 8 hours, it's stable.

Side note: Using the above described testing methodology, I have NEVER had an overclock "go bad" or "fail" or "mess up."

Exactly. I ran a conversion process (DivX to MPEG2) which took 24hrs (100% processor load). After that, I crowned it stable. ;)

SETI in the background, P95 in the tray, and 3DMark2001/03 on a looping benchmark.

Good grief, just use the damn thing. It'll crash, or not, and then you'll know.

you know, its funny, cause if i ran that many applications on say, my 2000xp system, it would crash. lol, to me its almost like people are trying to maul their cpu with all these applications running. back when i had my celeron's 366 @ 550, and my 566 @ 850, if it ran games without crashing, it was stable to me. id feel the same way right now with my p4, but knowing about prime95 made me self conscience about it, but after thinking about it, does it really matter? if i play a game and its stable, to me my system is basically stable. i dont do any intensive editing or encoding. i mainly just play games, html, downloading, and browsing. if you were one of the people with a celeron back in the day, i know damn well you didnt stress test your machine like you people are now. i mean, seriously, whats the point. lol

I'll run P95, loop 3DMark2001, download linux images, and play an 8 hour long Winamp playlist to test my OC. But P95 alone has never been enough all by itself.

when i test my oc, i just run 2 instances of prime95, that utilizes 100% of my cpu, i let it go overnite, and if their both still running, then its rock solid to me. but id never honestly use 100% of my cpu in general, so i dont see the point. :)

When you see a sign in elevator "up to 1500 lb" and there is 10 people in it together with you don't you wish they really tested it for bigger capacity? :D

Still, if it crashes at 26+ hours, then your system isn't stable. It all depends on what you do I suppose. I crunch SETI/SoB, so it's gotta go 24/7, no errors. :)

Hah, that makes sense. But im one of those people who checks for leaks before getting in the boat. If it floats with me in it, then it will work just fine. :) I guess what it really comes down to is, what you use your pc for. If your gonna do crazy encoding/decoding, or something that utilizes alot of the cpu then it makes sense to stress test it, but if you are a gamer, your never going to use 100% of your cpu usage, so its not going to crash. If you can pass one instance of prime95 without it failing, and if all you do is general things and game, then you should be good.

btw, i suck at metaphors.

there isnt a program made that can tell you if your system is stable.
however, there are plenty that can tell you its not ;)
