Swype comes free with many phones.

Personally I love onscreen keyboards as I hate the extra bulk. Depending on the content I can type 20+wpm on my iPhone. Only thing that slows me down I typing tech stuff, as the iPhone corrects tech words and acronyms to be normal words (arggg).

On Android my favorite keyboard is Swiftkey. The beta tablet version needs to be on every Android tablet.

I used an Evo 4G for almost a year and could never get used to the Android keyboard. Switched to the HD7 and I have to say the keyboard is so much better. It's not as good as a real physical keyboard, but it's good enough where I'd rather have a slimmer & lighter phone vs. a physical keyboard.

Its taken me a long time to get used to it, took a conscious effort on my Droid 1. The point was to get used to it though to make it an easier transition to a new phone.

On the Droid 1, I got used to the stock Froyo keyboard, then the Gingerbread keyboard. I attempted to use the HTC keyboard for a while, but it was too laggy. Never much cared for Swype at all, the beta lasted a few hours on my phone before I completely uninstalled it. Swiftkey was early beta when I tried it, so it didn't last long either.

well believe me you will get use to this type of typing in a few weeks. Basically it depends on how many things you type a day

Used my D1/Milestone keyboard for like 1-2 days. I never went back except to do stuff in recovery with it.

I came from iPod Touch, and it took a while to get used to it, but after a while I was sending IMs blindly. You have to trust the spell correction. I think Android's still a step behind but the iOS prediction/correction is beyond amazing. You wonder why they only give you 1 choice, but it's because they're spot on most of the time. Swype's prediction is pretty good too, but the Ginger keyboard needs some work. I'm glad it finally got multitouch for speed typing though.

I've never been able to get used to it on my Droid 1. But the physical keyboard on the Droid 1 is worse, so I suffer through the onscreen keyboard. I use the htc_IME keyoard.
