Some day your children are going to hear dirty words...they'll even say them. What are you going to do then?
Well, the two kids in the street were black and they weren't using it in a joking manner. They were talking about some other kid they knew and using it in a negative manner. I have to refer to Bill Cosby's rant on the use of the "N" word because he said it best. And 'the N word' as you so safely put it...words are words. Don't you find it a bit silly that certain words are taboo? I mean, nobody really cares if I say fvck, ass, hell or damn in a casual, non business setting, but say n_gger, and it's worse than if your grandparents walked down the treet waving their penises at people. Is that really progress? Being a racist is different, but we're afraid to say that word even in an academic setting. It's true that there is rarely a time when you could say it and NOT bebeing racist, but it's not fundamentally different from "wop" "beloved patriot" "cracker"..."polack" (I'm running out here)...but these words can be said in jest. Why is that? It seems like we're moving backward, not forward.
Not offended.Sorry for the long rant, and I hope that noone is so uptight as to be offended. Keep this rational.
Good to hear.
Now, it sounds like you're not too far off, but your actions seem unnecessary in actually confronting these kids, but I guess I wasn't there, so I won't pass judgement. But don't think that if your kids go to public school they'll get past 2nd grade without hearing expletives.
