Do You Get Scared Turning on a New Build For the First Time?

Do you still sweat and have a faster heart beat when you fire it up for the first time? I do. Even though I know everything's put together fine, you just hope that you didn't make a mistake and sparks start to fly. I wonder if I'm the only one even though I've built lots of systems.

Last night, I was extra nervous cuz I kinda f*cked up a PSU mod and the board wasn't getting enough power. So I took a tiny screwdriver and a pair of tweezers and went to work on the connector. I got so agressive that I pushed the pin through the front of the connector and ripped it out with a pair of plyers! I re-crimped the offending rail extra tight and now everything's humming.

Hah. No. God knows how many times I forget to plug in the Video Card's power adapter and I get the warning message, etc.

Not really, but.. I'm sure that it's more-or-less a combined function of experience, fearlessness, and cluelessness, not necessarily in that order. Kind of like getting into the driver's seat of a car for the first time. Or getting behind the wheel of an unfamiliar car, even though you are are an experienced driver. If you are concerned, then you aren't totally clueless about the potential effects; that's likely a good thing. But yeah, I still sort of say a small prayer before I power-on a new build. Just a little extra safety-net from the Lord above. :)

I rarely, if ever, get the LEDs the right way around the first time though. It scares me when I do, because then I wonder what other mistake that I made instead of that one, generally to a more-important part. (I figure it on a scale of mistakes-point allocations, almost like an RPG. Do you allocate your points on a low-level mistake, or do you save them up, and work towards a high-level mistake? I try to squander tham on low-level mistakes early on. :) )

I usually do it incrementally so I don't get to worried about it.

1. After installing CPU, install vid card, ram.... then attach powersupply, monitor, keyboard.... try to start it up on a piece of cardboard or that foam pad that comes with motherboards

2. Install in the case and attach same components as step 1

3. Install everything else and see if it still starts up

I usually brace for anger before starting up a new box, if it dosen't turn on I get pissed, not scared.

Well MrControversial, wouldn't it suck if you got some money saved up for a complete new rig, then when you turned it on something went wrong and the entire computer went up in smoke? At least being "poor" you can do it incrementally and if something dies it will only be one or two components.

Very true, Wheelman56. We are talking about the old "smoke test." I remember being apprehensive - but never scared. Incremental testing does have some appeal and logic. And sometimes, poverty is a state of mind.

I remember when I built my first system, and was so nervous to turn it on. When I actually did nothing happened! After a few hours of connecting and re-connecting it turned out to be the outlet was bad. I just swithced outlets and everything roared to a start, LOL.

Oddly enough, I only get apprehensive when its my computer Im building. When I built my friends computers, i spent less attention, less time, and less worry on it, and no problems, no mishaps, nothing wrong. Just hit the power buttone and everything was great.

Not really.

The biggest scare was when I was checking something with the HSF off, and I suppose I triggered something, the computer powered on. Fearing my CPU would fry, and I immediately ripped the powersupply cable out of the back. Of course, with my reaction time, and the time it took me to realize what was going on and all, it took a couple of seconds from power on, to power off.

Nothing fried, but I am still bewildered by how it turned on in the first place.

And that's because you know it won't cost you anything.. Chances are everything goes fine, but if somehow there is a slip up it could cost ya..

That being said, never really nervous, but anxious... Can't wait to get in there and OC.

:D

^^^ Good reason to always unplug before working on a machine. :)

a little, last time I was up to 1000 dollars turned it on for first time and the heat alarm started going beep beep beep beep ............. went into pc health real quick it said 170 farenheit...the whole time beep beep beeep beeep......
crap shut it off real quick decided to reseat heatsink (a couple of times as it turned out)
fired it up beep beep beep beep...by this time I'm thinking omg was hard to think with all that beeping and $$$ flying bye my eyes.

finally talked to a friend and were like saying somethings weird here its not hot to the touch , no smoke, or oders.
checked mb website for bios updates sure enough one of them was for cpu temp calibration.
flashed bios even under heavy load system never gets over 45 celcius now.

So here I was all these big beads of sweat over bogus bios reading..omg felt like strangling someone:eek:

Lol, exactly why if anyone builds a computer for me I'm going to make sure its completely their responsibility if anything goes wrong during the build :D
