Do you get offended if, when purchasing something with a credit card, the cashier asks for your ID?

I've never had a customer actually say no, and I have had tons of smart people thank me. Definitely a good policy.

I'm still confused:
left it up to my manager, and he had my check him out, while explaining I did the right thing blah blah blah. Explaining how it protects them from credit card theft (Oh, and supposedly they had their credit cards stolen not to long ago... ya right...). So he left the store, never did show his ID, and I got a good story to tell my friends

Did he get to buy his ink cartridge without showing ID or did he leave with no cartridge?

Sorry if I was confusing. Typed it up in kinda a hurry 🙂 He never showed his ID. For all I know had had stolen the card. Oh and just for the record, I had no clue he was Russian until his wife yelled it at us.

No. Doesn't bother me at all.

I don't give out my phone # though (unless some type of home delivery is required), but that's a different thread.
Care to elaborate?
When they ask you for your phone # at point-of-sale when they have no need for it except to put it in their marketing database. That's not for consumer protection. Even so, I would never be an asshat like that what you described -- that guy needs help...

You know your not allowed to have a company police of asking for ID right?

edit
Never had anyone ask for my ID but yeah it would be a pain in the ass.

Why's it a pain in the ass? It takes one second for you to show the ID with your name and signature on it, and it saves you tons of time/money preventing credit card theft/fraud.

It takes 3 seconds man, chill out.

Ahh yes, that makes sense, and I totally agree with you. Infact, something weird today someone made a cash purchase of some substantial amount (atleast $50, and the computer asked for his phone #/address, I thought that was kinda stupid)

NO! Hell, I feel like tipping them when they do that. If more people checked IDs there would be a hell of a lot less CC fraud.

Initially I did, until I realized that they are protecting themselves (I won't say they're protecting me because _I_ know I'm authorized to use it 😉), and moreover it says on the credit card to ask for ID.

In a 'round about way, they are protecting you. Theft and fraud is ultimately paid for by the consumer.

I'll go against the grain here and say Yes, it does annoy me. It's as if the person is judging me and accusing me of not being who I say I am. I understand it's not rational, but that's just my initial response. No one ever said that your initial reaction to something is going to be rational... this happens to all of us.

So after you take a second to think about it, are you still upset? Are we still judging you?

I don't actively get offended, but I do notice when / where / how they ask for it vs when/where/how they don't. I tend to shop in reasonably "nice" areas and I'd say on average I get asked for my id.. hmm.. probably 1 out of 30 credit card transactions.

In fact, it usually strikes me as really odd when someone asks - wait.. in fact, it usually strikes me as odd when someone even double checks the signature, as so many places don't even do that.

I am constantly getting annoyed with my girlfriend, who will pull out her credit card and ID and hand the two of them to everyone/anyone. Not for any good reason other than that doing that *implies* that the person taking her credit card is going to question it. I've watched her get quite a few odd looks from sales clerks / waiters for doing it.

Edit: the more I think about it, the LESS often I think this happens to me. I'm almost willing to bet that it only happens 1 out of 50 card uses, which for me would probably translate into once every 2 months or so). And of course, for anyone who is wondering, I'm your average late 20s white male, and I charge all kinds of things, from $5 crap in home depot to $200 dinners.

I never have a problems showing ID. I won't give out my phone number, though. and if the "system" requires one, I tell them to put in 555-1212. (I used to get WAY too many telemarketing calls).

at the GNC that i own, we almost always as for ID when useing a CC. Most people love it, cuz they feel more secure. I have never had someone flipout on my like when asked to show ID.

I get annoyed, as it's NO FORM OF PROTECTION WHATSOEVER AND PUELY INCONVENIENCE.

then again I usually leave it visible and sig up so as not to have to pull it back out.

That guy had issues totally unrelated to his credit card or your asking for his ID.

Yes.

To the original question: NO!

In fact, after I "validate" my cards with my signature in ball-point ink, I write "ASK FOR ID" in red Sharpie right over my signature.

I don't see why it's a big deal. Are some offended because they're thinking the cashier doesn't trust that credit card belongs to him or her? It's pretty standard for me.

Usually, unless I'm in a bad mood to begin with! 🙂

Although one time I did have a horrible experience with a restaraunt manager over charges for food that I didn't think I should be charged for. It's a long story, but the manager had the COMPLETELY opposite attitude of "the customer is always right" (over a matter of $2). When I finally gave up and paid for the bill, he took a looong look at the signature on the card and compared it to mine. Then he asked to see my I.D., as if my signature comparison wasn't good enough for him. I was thoroughly incensed at that point, as any reasonable person would be, but I just wanted to get out of there sooner rather than later.

Moral of the story, never eat at Bubba's Barbeque in Yuma AZ. 🙂

Employees checking ID are probably the most effective security feature any credit card company can ask for. The guy had some issues. Won't he be in for a surprise when he really is a victim of racism, and it won't be over some ink cartridge.

You are an idiot. How can you say its no protection whatsoever? Its alot easier to jack someones credit card, and then use it if you don't have to show picture ID that has the same name thats on the credit card. Sure its not foolproof, but Im sure it stops alot of credit card theft. Is it really that big a deal that you have to throw a fit over 3 extra seconds of your time?
