Headphones for sure.

If I could afford it, I would buy a nice set of speakers that matched the quality of my ATH-M50's, but I can't.

As mentioned above, headphones give you better sound for your money.

Usually speakers. I dont like having something chained to my head.

Though I will admit good headphones can make for a nice gaming experience some times.

Audio technica Ad700s are good but they can't touch akg q701's.

Q701's are the best gaming cans you can buy provided you drive them well enough.

Used to be speakers all the time, used headphones once to not disturb the wife and liked it much more. Now 100% headphones.

I use headphones. Basically what another poster said: for the same price, you can get much better sound. Additionally, shuts out background noise.

Both - but headphones more. If I'm playing any sort of single player experience at night, particularly something really immersive - headphones are a must.

If I'm just playing some Counter-Strike or something in the middle of the day, I may go with speakers. If I'm playing something console-ish I may use my soundbar over on the TV across the room. If I want that console experience. I guess I used the sound bar a lot (and my TV's wireless headphones) recently for Crysis 3 and Tomb Raider.

Headphones is always plugged in. Sometimes I put them on, but mostly I just let it lie on my desk, i.e I mostly don't care about the sound while gaming.

Headphones exclusively, my current monitor doesn't even have the cheap speakers most use to come with.

Headphones are just better. Speakers can be very good, but you need to be in a properly setup room and be able to turn the volume up without disturbing people. That's very difficult.

Just my wife around and she does not care about the volume so I use a set of Energy 5.0 micros with a polk 10" sub. Works very well and produces great sound. That being said, I am still looking at getting a decent set of headphones to plug into my yamaha receiver. Though I really enjoy having true surround sound.

EDIT
Ok, question for you guys. I love my setup for movies and games but if headphones are so much better, do you guys have anything in the $100ish range you would recommend for a gaming set of cans? I don't need audiophile level sound, but I would like something that can approximate surround. I am using a Yamaha RX-V373 with my setup, a fairly basic receiver that does the job for a room as small as mine. I assume that could power headphones that required an external amp?

Thanks!
