Do you find you have too many computers?

No. I currently have a desktop, a five-year-old laptop, and a work laptop. I'm considering donating my old laptop to charity, and I also am in the process of throwing away a bunch of old hardware. I'm sure I could make some money back by selling on Half.com or something, but in the end, my need to have a clean house outweighs my need for a few extra bucks.

I'm always happy to take donations of excess computers 😀...me being down to just one and too poor to build a good one.

Not really. What's wrong with having 3 separate computers just for myself. But scary in the other topic how many of us have 5+ computers. Yet so many households don't even have a single computer.

Cant see how I could possibly USE them. My desktop does everything I want.

The only thing I could possibly think of is an old box as a fileserver running Linux or something. Of course they make pretty cheap NAS now.. pretty much like an ext hard drive on the network AFAIK. Or I would maybe want a HTPC, but a modded Xbox 1 can serve as pretty much all of that, and for a lot cheaper. Load up an Xbox with a 500GB hdd. Map the FTP address as a folder in XP, so it can be used for storage, as well as playing music and movies from its drive or streamed over the network. Plus its just more practical to have that little box running 24/7 then a big case with monitor and other crap.

Currently my wife and I have 2 desktops and a laptop. Buying another laptop soon, and probably a new desktop in about a year. Perhaps a server too.

I have quite a few (4), but find it is hard to use them all constantly given the power cost in California. For example, if I leave my desktop on, it costs about 26$ a month to run 24/7 (says the kill-a-watt).

When I was living in school housing, I didn't have to pay for power, and always left my desktop and file server on all the time. Now that I am paying for power again, I'm more inclined to consolidate everything into one machine that I just turn on and off when I actually use it. Most of the time I just use my powerbook, unless I am playing games, as it takes less than 60W to operate.

Counting my work laptop (which I carry everywhere I go, use it more than my personal) I have 2 laptops, 3 desktops and 1 HTPC, which is pretty much another desktop.

I would gladly donate my PC to a house in need of one, but the only problem is that it needs a valid OS for it, heh.

I have 9 or so computers, most of them not working or half taken apart. I want to throw a few of them out but haven't looked into that computer recycling that you're supposed to do.

I have one gaming machine (can play anything with at least medium graphics). I have one media PC (and secondary gaming machine, it has a 9600 XT and is an ancient 1.8 GHz P4, so it can't play some of the latest games).

I have one box that isn't really worth anything. It's got some crappy hardware. I was going to install linux on it, but the install was having difficulty detecting the CD-ROM drive. Apparently it's a known issue with that distro on older computers and I just haven't gotten around to trying a different one.

I have one box in my closet that isn't doing anything at all

So technically I have two computers too many, but I wouldn't be saying that if the other two computers had decent hardware. They don't meet the min requirements for Windows XP, that's how old they are. I could do the Win98 thing for older games, but most of the old DOS games have been rereleased for XP anyway (command and conquer in particular).

not a problem. any open source operating system fits the bill on that.

if they know how to use it, and if it can suit their purposes 😉

There's no such thing as 'too many computers'.

It's like asking if there's such a thing as 'too much peanut butter' or 'too much ice-cream', or 'too much Alizee'.

not any worse then windows can.

Personally, I find unix a hell of a lot easier to use and understand then windows.

And I got more years of experience using Windows. Figure that one out 😛
