I think what most people consider to be an unacceptable racist joke is one that directly (or perhaps indirectly) references that group's subjugation at some point in history. Say for example if there were jokes going around about 'rat-faced Jews' in Germany in the WW2 era, that falls into the criteria I've just outlined.

Yeah. Those jokes aren't really funny though. They're meant to be mean spirited and nothing else. The people that laugh at them genuinely are racist. I can imagine what such a joke would have gone like:

"Knock Knock"

"Who's there."

"A Rat faced Jew"!!

(everyone laughs)

That's not funny AT ALL, but it provides an opportunity to say something bad about jews, which is the only purpose anyway.

The best racist jokes strangely are the ones that hit closest to home on the behavioral stereotypes of the race in question. Jokes about mexicans stealing, or blacks being lazy, Jews being tight with money, or whites being uptight in general can make anyone who is familiar with the stereotype laugh if they are well crafted. Even a member of the race in question will usually laugh, because it is sort of implied that we're not talking that particular person, and it's easy to spread the jokes around so that every race gets a shot anyway.

I don't know about racist jokes, but I got I good chuckle once when I made a post about Huckleberry Finn in discussion club on the topic of censorship in getting one of it's words changed, only for the word to be ***** out after posting. :p Here I was talking about censorship and my own post on the subject was censored! XD Irony at it's finest.

The censorship thing really is bizarre. That gets protected, but not the equally derogatory beloved patriot or beloved patriot?

If it were up to me I wouldn't censor anything, but would occasionally search for those words. I'd still have to read some of the posts' context to see if any actual discussion were going on, but it would still be a really easy way to root out the shameless racists.

Fuck yes. I (usually) find most of them hilarious, even though I can't stand serious racism at all. Same goes with sexist jokes.

Gee, I'm surprised at the poll results. Maybe I don't hear a lot of racist jokes. I live in Berkeley, CA and we tend to be very politically correct here. Racist jokes around here are as rare as Republicans.

OK, I'm not posting a racist joke, I'm just posting the Admin adomonition against posting them here:

Discussing it okay. Posting the jokes. Not.

I think I'll mosey on out of here (I'm just killing a few minutes waiting for my video to upload)...

Racist jokes just for the sake of being racist? No, typically not. But jokes which are actually funny that include a racist theme don't offend me.

I think racist jokes can be funny... I've heard quite a few and of course most of the punchlines are just based on shock value or throwing curve balls to get a chuckle.

For instance. Here is a joke I heard when I was 10....cleaned up to apply to any race or nationality...

If you were driving down the road and saw a gentleman riding a bike, would you hit him with your car?

(most other 10 year olds would reply, "Hell yeah I would..."

That's when you reply, "I wouldn't do that if I were you....it might be your bike."

So we can say any slur we want, as long as it's not a six-letter word than starts with 'n' and ends with 'igger.' Well, isn't that just fucking retarded. Nothing like fighting racism meaningless words with racism kneejerk stupidity.

I want the word 'wigger' banned, too. If you think it's okay to call a white person who 'acts black' a wigger, but think that other word is OMG EVIL, congrats, you're racist, illogical, and stupid. A dipshit trifecta.

Humour that isn't offensive to anyone is pretty rare.

We're using 'offensive' in different ways.

When Jon Stewart does a bit pointing out some Republican looking like an idiot, Republicans could say "I'm offended by that". The might be, but it's not offensive.

Ya, it gets in to definitions and selections what to call offensive. Race humor is on the list.

Even if the political joke were offensive - there's more latitude for politics than everyone of a race, because of the importance of political free speech.

Political lies and insults are told and tolerated.

There's no similar importance to going around spreading race hate or offense.

Bottom line is the intent - if it has an underlying insult or degredation, motivated by racism or insensitivity to reasonable respect for people, ya.

Then there's context and consent. If you go to a comedy club, there are norms. You're going to hear race humor, sexist humor, whatever.

That a more consensual, private venue. Even there, while people have the right to read Adolf Hitler if they want, there are customary limits the humor isn't really meant as hate.

The AT forums and other public forums where people have not consented to that sort of humor, it's not an appropriate context for it. It's offensive to some readers.

Games about 'well I'm offended Obama is President so you can't mention him' are not legitimate 'offensive' content.

This stuff isn't rocket science, some people are just out to try to get the right to spread hate or make childish protests.

Fvck, if anything the Jews would be the first to make racist jokes on themselves. The world would be a better place if we learned from them instead the PC offense crap all over the place.
