Do you feel that people are always deserving of a second chance when they screw up?

Situational - mostly yes but I can think of a few times where I would definitely not give a second chance.

Define 'screwing up'.

Let's say your girlfriend/wife/SO cheated on you with another person. At that time they wanted to get intimate; there was desire and intent. At that time they completely disregarded any pact/trust/promise and did as they wished. Now let's suppose you find out and then they come clean, since it hasn't turned out in their favor, it immediately turns into a 'mistake' and they were 'stupid' and are now 'very sorry'. Should they get a second chance when they clearly wanted it in the first place, but are only sorry now that it has hurt someone or effected them in a negative way? I think not.

PS: No my girlfriend hasn't cheated on me - just making an example.

Depends on the situation but in general no.

Says the person with the name "QuitBanningMe" :D

:D The question said nothing of fourth or fifth chances. :p

Anyway if it is with me personally you get one chance as you probably knew my feelings before you did what you did.

Other situations vary.

Yes. Always. I think some of you are full of sh!t when you say that, and I probably am too (considering I haven't face the extremes forigving people).

But in events such as murder, especially nasty, pointless murder, it is important to understand the victim's family's side. The man may be repentent, it may be 50 years later and he is truely sorry and a changed man who can live in society without problems, but at the same time it is almost necessary to respect the victim's life by keeping him locked away forever for the murder.

depends....

if someone did something intentionally to hurt me, knew it would hurt me.. didnt care... and did it anyway... they are finished.
if someone was not thinking and fvcked up... yes.

of course, cheating is never excusable, nor forgivable.

:)

I'm not, and haven't had a hard time with it. Someone I hated most turned into a best friend once. I don't have grudges.

Things like murder, rape, molesting children, I don't really see a point why we should give them a second chance. It's not like those people will discover the cure for cancer.

It's hard enough to trust an "innocent" person, let alone someone who's committed a serious wrong.

Have you ever met someone who has truly turned around from that way of life? I have, and they can be just as beneficial to society or simply as a friend.

Sure, but did he murder and rape your mother? That is what I mean by the "extremes of forgiving people." I'd like to hear what your situation was.

Excluding cases of murder, rape and the like, do you think people are USUALLY deserving of a second chance?

It usually depends on the person, the circumstances, their past and the severity.

What happened and to who?

Well then yes, always. If you are excluding these things than the effects of their mistake are likely only temporary and can be fixed.

But it is often understandable.

I don't think it's fair to them to talk about them, and in any case I don't think it really matters. My mom, your sister, you shouldn't let your emotions get in the way of forgiveness. I have no emotions, so it's easier.

No. At least not from the person/persons the offense was against.
