Do you feel Blizzard is too conservative?

Not talking politics here of course. We all know Blizzard makes amazing games. They have rarely if ever made a misstep in the past decade or more. But then they only have 3 franchises and have released only a handful of games. They are famous for polishing their games non stop till they are perfect and not releasing games "till they are done". These are all commendable traits and ones that I wish more game developers had. However as the years pass I'm starting to feel that they are perhaps just a little too conservative. Starcraft II and Diablo III will undoubtedly be very good games but there's little doubt from what we have seen so far that they will be more of the same with better looking graphics. And even here they are playing to the lowest common denominator graphics wise. Most people would say why does it matter, if the game is good that's all that matters. I wonder though how long Blizzard can keep this up before people tire of their games. I'd really like them to try something dramatically different. Or at the very least give us some stunning looking games. I'd like to see them make use of something like the Cryengine and produce something stunning looking but with their some perfection philosophy in terms of game-play.

They will stick to what works for them. It makes them a crapload of money so as of right now, no reason for them to try to shake things up. I for one don't want them to. I want SC2 and D3 and don't want them to try to do anything different until those are out. Once those two are out, they can do whatever the hell I want cus I'll be busy playing those 2 for years to come.

Too conservative? Nah...business smart.. Yes.

I can't tell you how many times I tell people they are a company I have a love/hate relationship with. They have essentially killed MMORPG gaming. WoW is a power house and most newer mmo's are just WoW done a slightly different way (Eve excluded). Most other non-wowesque MMO's don't get past alpha.

They do the things they do because they can and probably execute a release when there charts and graphs feeding from the WoW server population stats hits a certain average lol

Me too. I just can't help wondering what SCII and DIII would be if they had been much more aggressive.

Blizzard is good at what they do. The last two WoW expansions non-withstanding, they have made nearly flawless games.

I'll take a game with fantastic gameplay over some shiny game with meh gameplay any day of the week. I played SC1 for years, WC3 for years, WoW for (way too many) years, and I'll probably play SCII for years as well.

I wish there were more dev/pub houses out there that put as much work and polish into their products as Blizzard does. I agree, they have taken way to long on SC2/D3 but we can blame a good part of that on WoW. But even still, I prefer their approach over shoveling out titles as quick as possible.

As for graphics and such, sure, I would love to see it be better as would anyone else, but Blizzard has built their franchises with art styles that simply work as they do and because of that aren't very graphically commanding.

I am really curious to see their new IP they are working on for their next MMO.

If it ain't broke..don't fix it!! :)

If you need something different -then you probably need to look elsewhere for something completely different... :)

Blizzard have some killer franchises. Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft. They're all massive and make them buckets of cash. You can't blame them for sticking with what they know.

game studios died left and right over the last decade.
so whatever they are doing is working.

very easy to sink in game business, unlike film/music, there is not much income stream from reissue/reuse down the line.

Blizzard has a new franchise in development. They've released almost no info on it though, other than confirming its existence. Apparently Jeff Kaplan is leading the development, so I imagine it's going to be pretty impressive.

Their next mmo will be a new franchise, they've stated this. Doubt we will see it for about five years though.

Blizzard is simply the best pc game developer imho. They make fantastic games, have the ability to see and develop excellent ideas and execute them flawlessly.

I still play Diablo 2 to this day.

Definately, theres no need for blizz to try anything new or venture into anything unknown because what they have is awesome. I hate when devs have a solid franchise and instead of making the next game as solid like the previous one they take a chance, change everything when there was no need and end up wrecking it.

Blizz are working on something new anyway though arent they? Some sort of new IP. Theyve got sci fi covered, fantasy covered, whatever diablo is covered, maybe it will be some sort of modern day game, i think blizzard would have something more interesting than that though.

They might never have made SC2/D3 if it wasent for WoW, they may not have had the money or mightve been scooped up by EA or someone. Ive always thought that because after the massive success of WoW comes a starcraft II announcement followed by diablo III.

I am looking forward to Blizzard's new MMO, although I just enjoyed the Warcraft franchise so much...maybe they'll take WoW back to it's vanilla roots and the new MMO can be the casual one ^_^

I'm sure whatever they make will be great, though. I have faith.

I'm not sure I agree that Starcraft 2 is just Starcraft with better graphics. Multiplayer plays very differently now, especially with the tier 1 changes. Terran tier 1 is NOTHING like it was in the first Starcraft, for example. The added/removed/replaced units and the hard counter system changes things up a lot.

The campaign is going to be completely different from the first game.

I would agree that at a very basic level (the general gameplay), Starcraft 2 is just like the first game, but that is about it.

Any idea when they might leak the first tid bits of info on what it might be? Maybe at this years Blizzcon?

In my opinion they aren't too conservative, if anything it's us (generally speaking) the gamers who are just impatient, many developers out there should study the Blizzard's policies and business model for their own success, other companies like EA and UbiSoft simply want things done way too fast, in their heads (EA's, Ubi's, and others similar) they think that they can make money by pouring out many games done fast in a short period of time, and it does work (sadly), it works because gamers continue to support that kind of business model (I'd like to see a NHL games fan telling me that I'm wrong). In Blizzard's case it's the opposite, they only have three franchises, but they milk them at their own pace, they are their own publisher as well, there's no deadline but their own (if there is one), they can and do push things back again and again to ensure that their games are above the quality "standards" of any other companies out there even including giants like Valve and BioWare (I'm not saying I hate Valve or BioWare, I'm just saying that especially recently they both took a different path then before, they seem to rush things a bit more now than they would have ever dared doing in the past).

In my opinion they really need to stay the way they are, whatever others say against them, or their business model, some of us... or rather many of us gamers might have the feeling that they are conservative because they haven't done anything "different" outside of their three franchises since their creation, and that they take their "sweet time" before getting things done, that's probably due to impatience as I mentioned, we all know that PC gamers are simply impatient overall, I would include myself in that group from time to time I can't hide it, but objectively speaking whatever we gamers think of Blizzard I really cross my fingers in hope that it never influences them ever, they've been great to the gaming market by providing good quality games over the years, and I wish that they keep doing it the same way, even if I myself am not interested at all in World of WarCraft for instance, I still can't deny that objectively speaking it is a good quality game, they've been milking it for years, but their milking seems to be good doesn't it? If people still play it today, if there's above 50 million subscribers worldwide it has to be mean something... the name Blizzard alone isn't fun enough for 50 million of gamers to stick together and keep playing, the actual game needs to be good, whatever we think of it, it works.

As I side note, I still don't agree with their recent business model "change" regarding StarCraft II and releasing three titles to tell the story of each of the three races for single-player campaigns, but that view of mine is simply a subjective judgment based on their fantastic revenues and how they seem so big that they could feed thousands of people all around the world and fund space shuttle missions by themselves because they literally could swim in their money, but their size, their influence and their business model still to this day haven't influenced the actual quality of their games in any negative way. I may not like what they're doing with SCII, but I do know inside me that SCII will sell like hotcakes for two principal reasons: 1) They are Blizzard, and still today it does mean that their games are of good quality and will be supported for years to come (just think of a decade-old game like Diablo II or even the original SC still being patched today, while most other developers out there outside of maybe Valve as a rare exception case usually leave their game for dead after two of three patches maximum) ... and 2) It's SC... so we are back at the main subject, being conservative, if their supporters and newcomers alike thought so then I don't think that SCII would be so hyped right now, the status of the SCII Beta, its popularity, the already good critical reception and reaction from the participants, etc., all points that Blizzard once again haven't disappointed, and even if there's anything "wrong" or "imbalanced" at release day then so what, it will be supported, patched, revised for the next years to come, look at how much the original SC and especially Diablo II have changed over the years, how many bugs were fixed, new items added, new features included and tweaked, new skills changed, new balance changes were done... no other companies than Blizzard, Valve and... well I can't think of any others at the moment, no others do it like that.

So, to conclude, no I don't think that Blizzard are conservative, I think that the gamers are simply impatient overall, but if Blizzard is indeed conservative for some reason I don't understand then I say so what? Let them be, their conservative approach to the gaming market hasn't killed them yet, still makes them pretty much the biggest developers out there with EA alongside (in terms of revenues, employees, etc.) and the fans don't seem to be tired of it, except perhaps for a minority, a minority that might well forget about it when they get their hands on and finally get to play either SCII or DIII for hours non-stop.

there are enough companies that spew out a ton of garbage to hope that some of it sticks. no need to ruin a great company

Blizzard just axes games in development. Starcraft Ghost and Warcraft Adventures are two of those that were canceled mid development. As with other studios I am sure they also have plenty of canned games that were never announced.

I'd love to see a Diablo spin-off that played like a 3rd person action RPG ala Mass Effect. I think the franchise is just begging for the increased immersion that could bring.

I think when World of Diablocraft comes out I'll cut ties with Blizzard forever. They're just gonna make MMO shit from now on.

They already "patched" Diablo 2 by dumbing it way the hell down. I can't wait for Diablo 3 when I have to grind for gold so that I can outfit my characters with the exact same equipment that everybody else has.
