Do you feel bad turning down salespeople after you kind of commit?

So I was getting kind of bored sitting at home so I decided to visit the mall. After I went to B&N I get stopped by a lady at one of those places selling grooming products. She asked me to rub this thing on my hands and then she washed them. The stuff that came off was my skin she said. My hands do indeed feel a lot cleaner and smoother and I can't remember any past time them feeling this way.

Anyway, I asked her to give me a good deal from the actual price of $64 or so. She went down to $40 but I was still not saying a complete yes but then she said $29.99.

It kind of made me feel bad but I just said no and said that I will see her later and maybe bring somebody later on (which I won't). Anyway, I lied and here I am.

What are you guys doing on this fun Saturday

Oh God. Did the exact same thing in the local mall. But I didn't feel bad because the chick was really pushy.

This didn't happen to be some Israeli chick selling your on the wonders of Dead Sea salt?

..plus she is trying to rob people if she asks for $64 but can still make a profit at $29.99.

Same here. When she first she saw she introduced herself, asked me if I'm 18 and then guessed my course in college to be either engineering or science related - it is neither.

I guess this is that thing to build trust first and make the person feel comfortable so he will buy it. She was kind of pushy - you probably have to be - and even asked me to kiss her hand (after using the special product to make it smooth and nice of course). But she was nice however.

LOL Supernova

Yes it was!!! This is the second mall I've been to where I've seen her. I even asked if I may have seen her at another mall and she said its her twin.

Well, maybe she travels around the Virginia/NC area. I swear I've seen her in multiple places, as well.

Oh, I forgot to tell you she gave me the same price quotes and also told me she was giving me the special "nurse" discount (I'm disabled and was with my nursing assistant at the time). I called bullshit.

1) If you do happen to look in the direction of the salesperson's booth, only make eye contact with the sales rep, and briefly. Maybe nod a greeting. Then look away and keep walking.

2) Do NOT even look at the products they're selling. Do not show any sign of interest, even if it's the kind of interest you might pay to a steaming pile of dog shit on the sidewalk. They will try to sell to you.

3) If necessary, spray Mace in the sales rep's face until she stops trying to sell to you. You might need more than one container. Switch to a Taser if that fails. Some sales reps just don't get the hint.

You, sir, are a born sucker. Don't ever feel guilty about saying no.

Part of the sales hype is making the mark feel guilty about doing that.

You owe nothing to anyone trying to get your money no matter what has transpired.

I'd seriously work on getting rid of the attitude that you "owe" anything to a sales person.

nope. Their attempts to waste my time removes all guilt I might feel from wasting their time.

I am on the other side of the fence. I have been a commissioned salesman for 9 years. My paycheck depends on me following up with customers that are interested. If someone isn't interested, I would much rather have them just be honest and tell me no.

While I don't think its a big deal in the scenario the OP posted, nothing pisses me off more than working on a deal for over a week just to find out the person is stroking me.

It wouldn't happen to be that "dead sea sea salt" shit, would it? Last Christmas me and my GF were in the mall and we stopped at one of those places. I decided to give it a try thinking what the hell, why not? So the foreign chick slathered up my hands with that shit while giving me some speech about the product. When she washed them off, my hands were bleeding. She started apologizing like crazy and she told me she'd give me it for cheap. ... Are you kidding me lady? My hands are bleeding for that fucking stuff. My hands tend to get REALLY dry during the winter months and I think the salt had it's way with my hands. Oh well.

When I was in sales I didn't mind if people sorta committed and backed out. I hated the deliberate time-wasters who would have you do all the paperwork, get an entire solution together, then leave. Once I had worked for a while, I learned to spot them and progessively reduce my level of helpfulness to them. We would get chronic losers who would come in almost every week, and they would always find an employee who hadn't caught on so I would have to page them and warn them to break it off or risk wasting an hour of their lives.
