There's the key. Confidence goes a long way, and in most situations the person speaking will know more than the audience does on the subject.

3- I get nervous a little but it's not that bad at all. I kind of got used to it after doing it so much in school.

It's about a 1. Granted, I may be a little anxious about it sometimes when I think about it (in the planning process or a little before)...but I control it pretty well and when I start speaking, it's all good. It's all about practicing and confidence.

I would recommend Dale Carnegie's "Guide To Effective Public Speaking."

I chose 8. I don't faint but I am extremely uncomfortable, visible nervous and will speak quickly to get it over with quick

1. I'm probably an attention whore, but I suppose as someone who acts as a hobby, it comes with the territory.

I'm in the same boat. Five years ago I would choke, sputter, and forget what I was saying whenever I was trying to present. Since then I was exposed to so much of it during my college career that now it's not a big deal. There's still a little anxiety when I'm waiting to go speak, but once I get going it seems very natural. It's true that the only way to get over the fear is to be exposed to it over and over again.

Most of the time it might be an 7 or 8, but if the topic was something I really knew and enjoyed, then I might be a 2.

About 5 years ago (almost to the day) I would have definitely said "10!!!!"

I was in the Army at the time and I was attending PLDC (aka "Sergeant School") and I had to give a block of instruction to my peers about determing the time of day without a watch or a clock. I had noticed that during everybody elses block of instruction (we all had to instruct on something different) the SGL (Small Group Leader - the teacher) would cut everybody short and say "Ok...go to the next step" so I figured that he would do the same thing to me and I'd be through it in no more than 2-3 minutes.

I started giving my class and everybody just locked focus on me...they were riveted by the fact that you could determine time with nothing more than a stick and some sunlight. The SGL didn't interrupt me once. It took me 15 minutes and the more I spoke the more comfortable I became. In the end I learned two things:

1) Public speaking wasn't SO bad
2) A riveted audience is a real ego-boost

Now, five years later, I would have to say I'm about a 4...I'd still rather avoid public speaking but I don't "fear" it.

Maybe a 3 or 4. I don't mind speaking in front of people but I get a little nervous before I go up. But once I start it goes away.

Eh, I wouldn't volunteer for it but it's not something that'll cause me to pass out.

I used to be deathly afraid of it, then I took a bunch of classes in college where I knew I would be put in front of an audience. Now I really enjoy giving presentations.

I voted "2". I do not mind public speaking but I do not "enjoy" it.

Where I work, delivering presentations is considered one of the basic skills that everyone should have. I have taken two or three courses on it.

I'm a 2 or 3, the private elementary/middle school that I went to put a pretty big emphasis on being comfortable speaking to large groups. I'm usually slightly jittery before I start but once I say the first word I'm as cool as a cucumber on xanax.

1 - I used to do competition public speaking (mostly impromptu), so I actually enjoy speaking in front of large groups.
