Ways around your first paragraph without FORCING them into the military. And as everyone knows it can be very hard to be a conscientious objector, so yes absolutely it's a fact Americans have died in wars they did not want to be in. Why else would some have run, for example, to Canada? Ever heard the term draft dodging?
There are ways now but at the time there were not. They were only interested in getting those that wanted to join into the fight as quick as possible. It isn't hard to file a claim as an objector. The reason people ran is because they didn't want the stigma that came along with being an objector. It was run away because the reasons for not wanting to fight had more to do with themselves than any moral reason. They were afraid that if they were drafted they wouldn't have the courage to withstand the defamatory comments of those that accepted the draft. Those that did not fight because it was against their principles often claimed objector exemptions vs running and were willing to do so because they believed in what they were doing.
the rules now are way more lenient than before so just about anyone can be exempt if they really want to.
Conscientious objection as prescribed by Section 6(j) of the Military Selective Service Act, which states: "nothing contained in this title shall be construed to require any person to be subject to combatant training and service in the Armed Forces of the United States who, by reason of religious training and belief, is conscientiously opposed to participation in war in any form."
Military personnel who develop a conscientious objection to military service may apply for reassignment to non-combatant duties or discharge from the Armed Forces under Department of Defense Directive 1300.6.
This Directive sets out the full procedure for achieving CO status. CO status is only granted to a CO "who is conscientiously opposed to participation in war in any form; whose opposition is found on religious training and belief; and whose position is sincere and deeply held."
