Do you ever upgrade just to tinker with your PC? -=Official Upgradaholics Anonymous Thread, come in and share=-

I was thinking of upgrading from my current ECS K7S5A mobo to an Asus A7V333 (for overclocking features and internal diode reading), then I realized that my current setup is plenty fast for everything I do. Even after this realization I'm still tempted to upgrade, mostly because I love to tinker with my computer. Any of you ever do this?

Tinker ?

All the time, even with my "private" computer, just for fun.
Thank God I don't have to pay for the stuff...but even if I had to I wouldn't be able to resist 😀.

First time was for need...........

All the rest have all been for fun!

(Gaming is better after each one, but I can't call it "need")

yup............

There's no reason whatsoever that I needed that G-force 3. no good reason. I just brought so I can say I have a "Geforce3." and about 7 days later, the Gforce4 came out!!!:disgust:

Damn Skippy! I change something at least once or twice a month. I love tinkering, and increasing the performance is a nice side effect.

I still love to tinker, but nowadays, since money is tighter, I tend not to upgrade unless there's a good deal.

Also if my current rig is fast enough, perfectly stable, and quiet enough, I wouldn't want to tinker pointlessly.

edit: in the name of Leo V's crusade for silence 😛

I researched all about water cooling and think its so neat. Do i really have a hot processor, no, and need water cooling, no. But it would be alot of fun to install and tinker with, YES,yes, yes. But for the money spent on one of those i could upgrade my motherboard and memory(to DDR). So as allways i bought nothing because im a college student and poor. So i guess my computer is good enough *sigh*.

i wish i had the money to upgrade it just to tinker....

i have to settle for taking apart my computer every once in awhile and putting it back together.

I only upgrade to get faster performance and more features.

However occasionally I'll buy hardware that I don't really need but I'll use it for testing purposes (eg my Radeon 7000).

Was this a serious question? This is Anandtech after all, its like one of the ultimate computer geek (said with pride...😀) hangouts on the web. Isn't that like going to a Ricer forum and asking how many there like to drive their car stock......... :Q

My name is Novice, and I am a "compulsive upgrader". My obsession relates more to bang for the buck deals in the constant quest to make my systems better, faster more storage, etc. for the lowest possible costs. I can't pass up the $19.95 after rebate 32x12x40 cdrw, the 40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive for $69.95 after rebate including ATA 133 controller card, or the $19.95 after rebate 256 MB stick of PC-133 Kingston Valueram! Even after I swore that I would quit buying PC-133 ram and start shopping for deals on PC-2100 DDR to prepare for the next wave of upgrade(s). Thankfully my sympathetic wife gave me the go ahead to build her an "upstairs" system to join the 3 system lan downstairs, so the aforementioned products won't go to waste. (Although she did have the audacity to inquire why all 3 systems downstairs each had to have their own CD Burner!) If you share my affliction, you know the answer to that: "Because I found great deal(s) on an even faster burner than the one(s) we already have!" It sure is fun, though..😀:|:Q

I want, nay, I *need* the fastest computer on my block (I love those bragging rights)

eheheheh

Well, that was the closest option to "Because I can"

It's not really that I'm competing with anyone - because the fastest machine any of my friends own is only an XP 1800, 256mb, w/ a GF2MX400... so my last upgrade wasn't motivated by that, But I do like to have a faster machine than anyone I know, and you can only stay in front if you upgrade contantly.

It's like at the moment, I'm somewhat peturbed that I can only JUST run UT2003 in 640x480 with full detail levels, 4x FSAA, and AF.
Because of that, I'm going to buy a GF4.

It doesn't lag, nothing else except some lame Formula-1 game ever drops frames at 1024x768 (forced 4x, AF if supported, full detail) - so I dont NEED to upgrade, but I know my videocard is a bottleneck, so it's getting replaced (for the second time in as many months, almost...).

Next time I hit a bottleneck, i'll probably replace that, too.

One of the network engineers where I work asked me why I run SCSI RAID... I said why not?

So I guess you might need another option on your poll - one for people who upgrade to the fastest cost-effective thing they can get their hands on... solely because... that extra .5 seconds of loading time could be circumvented 😉

Unfoprtunately I have s trong tendency to upgrade and/or buy additional hardware for extra systems even when I don't need it. It's a waste of money, and quite an expensive hobby.
Cut's into funds that could be put to a much better use.

Almost deserves to be treated as a mental disorder... it's like a compulsion.
Money is a bit tight though, so I generally manage to hold off purchasing needlessly.

The is probaly a cheaper hobby for me then some other ones I would like to dabble into. Like home theatre, car audio, etc...

Any case my comp is never the same for long. Something is alwys changed out and upgraded 🙂

yes.. definitely... Checking fry's ads every friday to 'see if there's anything I need'. Has anyone ever made a '10 reasons why your computer is better than a girlfriend' list yet? I could certainly contribute to that...
