It's called people who are lower/middle class with $100,000 in debt so people like you think they are rich.

I always see countless brand new BMWs in lower class neighborhoods, apartment complexes, trailer parks, etc.

Ironically the people with the biggest/nicest/most expensive houses that I know drive Corollas and Scions.

But yeah if you have a fleet of BMW's you are either rich or in severe debt.

Or bought used, or leased.

I'll give you used but leased?? No way. Thats like $500 a month minimum payment per car.

The money factor is often excellent on BMWs because they keep their value so well. Combine that with the business benefits of a lease, it's often a much better choice than buying. Though the rich are often wise with their money, some poorer people are as well.

The only BMW that has decent resale value is the 3 series and some M cars...

I chuckle every time I see a used 7 series... A 2 year old $70k car for the price of a new corolla.

I'm on an X5 board all the time and people are all about loyalty after they experience a good thing. They swear by it - you'd think they're just in it for the name but a lot are not. They are true enthusiasts. Some also get a bit crazy and put themselves on a 2-yr wait list for a Ferrari too. They know where the goods are.

Straight out of "Millionaire Next Door". I returned that pile of garbage after a day and got my $10 back. These people are walking around in Salvation Army-looking clothes and looking unkept. These "wealthy" people have money because they don't spend it. Simple as that. WTF is working 10 hours a day, 7 days a week good for if you can't enjoy what you earn? It's one thing not to show it off but it's another if you're going to limit yourself and not buy the best you can enjoy given how "wealthy" you are. One lifetime and it's save this, save that... I roll my eyes.

Where? I'll take a 2 year old 7-series for the price of a new corolla.

$37k was the absolute cheapest I found in the country. That's a damn expensive Corolla. Or maybe by Corolla he meant Lexus IS350.

Yeah, I see avg-to-low mileage 2003's going for around 30k. That's still an expensive Corolla.

My family has always stuck with the same brand and mostly the same model. When the cars die they get replaced with whatever works well at the time. 🙂

1980 Datsun 210 wagon (Mom)
1981 Datsun 210 sedan (Dad)
1979 Datsun 210 wagon (shared with my sister)

1994 Saturn SL1 (Mom)
1995 Saturn SL2 (Dad)
1995 Saturn SL1 (Sis)
1995 Saturn SL1 (Me)

2005 Hyundai Elantra GT hatch (Dad)
2006 Hyundai Elantra GT hatch (Mom)
2005 Hyundai Elantra GT hatch (Me)
1995 Saturn SL1 (Sis, she's the odd one out now 🙂 )

And the corolla will last you 10 years with minimal maintenance, while the used bmw will cost you an arm and a leg if it lasts ten years.

No question, there are definitely bad choices as well.

I just wanted to explain how leasing is not always a bad option. Sometimes, it's the wisest choice for your money.

I have seen many BMW families before, but what I haven't seen yet is an M family 🙂
Something along the lines of :

M5
M3
M3
M6
M Coupe
M Roadster

That would be either a very very happy family or very very stupid yet until the foreclosures still a very happy family 😀

A lot of brands are like this, there's Chevy or GM families(GTO, Silverado, Corvette)

Ford families, (Mustang GT, F150, Taurus, Windstar)

Toyota/Lexus families(Mine tend to follow this, Tercel, Camry, MR2, SC400, ES350)

Honda families(Civic, Accord, Integra), etc.

Brand loyalty isn't confined to only BMW.

QFT...probably a shens post...in those same neighborhoods you'd see mercedes familys, lexus families, and the like as well esp Ford and GM.

and vw families (1982 rabbit diesel truck, 68 rusted out bus in back yard, 2000 jetta tdi, 56 oval window bug... thats a friend. then theres me with an 84 vanagon)

Tell your friend to sell me the rabbit for cheap! Do it now. I've got a 1915 T1 engine to give him in trade.

Yep. Although Subaru/Honda/Toyota/VW families are more common here. Outback wagon families seem to be really common.

BMW /Audi guy myself....And I'm not rich by no means. The BMW is a 98 M3 Estoril Vert. My Audi is a 90 Avant V8Q

Have been apart of the VW/Audi seen for years. Bought the M3 several years ago.

all honda's and acura's
1984 accord, 1985 legend, 1991 integra, ???? cr-x, 1995 civic, 1997 accord, 2001 accord, 2008 tsx

all bought new, many sold used for good value.

honda ftw!

My family use to be exclusively domestic but now we're about even:

Dodge
Jeep
GMC
Ford
Mercedes
Infiniti
Subaru
and hopefully a Nissan by the end of summer, possibly a Honda too.

I have a friend who's family is exclusively German imports BMW(dad, mom, sister)/Audi(himself)/VW(other sister). Also a guy in the neighborhood who's family(3 generations) is exclusively toyota.

we've had 4 hondas in our family and every single one of them had exhaust pipes that broke off (while on the highway no less) right after the catalytic converter area. WTF is it about that issue and Hondas? '91, '88, '96, '97 Accords and Civics. Cheap parts or what? Condensation / road salt perhaps, but no such issue on non-Hondas.
